Radio Saint Helena
Radio Saint Helena (call-sign: ''ZHH'') was a local radio station serving the South Atlantic island of Saint Helena. Broadcasting on an AM frequency of 1548 kHz (194 m), the station was audible within a range of about 100 km from the island. The organisation which ran the service, St Helena News Media Services, also produced a weekly newspaper, the ''St Helena Herald''. The offices were located at Broadway House, Jamestown, whilst the station's broadcasts were radiated from a transmitter in St Paul's. The first broadcast was on Christmas Day 1967 broadcasting on 1511 KHz until 1978. Radio St Helena also broadcast internationally on one day each year – on 11.0925 MHz shortwave – using the call-sign ''ZHH-50''. Saint Helena () is a British overseas territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is a remote volcanic tropical island west of the coast of south-western Africa, and east of Rio de Janeiro in South America. AM Broadcasting
AM broadcasting is radio broadcasting using amplitude modulation (AM) transmissions. It was the first method developed for making audio radio transmissions, and is still used worldwide, primarily for medium wave (also known as "AM band") transmissions, but also on the longwave and shortwave radio bands. The earliest experimental AM transmissions began in the early 1900s. However, widespread AM broadcasting was not established until the 1920s, following the development of vacuum tube receivers and transmitters. Jamestown, Saint Helena
Jamestown is the capital city of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, located on the island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is also the historic main settlement of the island and is on its north-western coast. Before the development of the port at Rupert's Bay, it was the island's only port and the centre of the island's road and communications network. It was founded when colonists from the English East India Company settled on the island in 1659 and was briefly occupied by the Dutch East India Company in 1673 before being recaptured. Many of the buildings built by the East India Company in the 18th century survive and give the town its distinctive Georgian flavour. St. Paul's is one of eight districts of the island of Saint Helena, part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is the second-most heavily populated district on the island and is located on its northwestern coast. Description Terrain in the district is quite varied with steep ridges and a limited amount of flat ground, as befits the island's volcanic origin. Shortwave Radio
Shortwave radio is radio transmission using shortwave (SW) radio frequencies. There is no official definition of the band, but the range always includes all of the high frequency band (HF), which extends from 3 to 30 MHz (100 to 10 metres); above the medium frequency band (MF), to the bottom of the VHF band. Radio waves in the shortwave band can be reflected or refracted from a layer of electrically charged atoms in the atmosphere called the ionosphere. Therefore, short waves directed at an angle into the sky can be reflected back to Earth at great distances, beyond the horizon. This is called skywave or "skip" propagation. It was the only independent radio station broadcasting on Saint Helena, and was also the island's only FM station. The station is owned by Saint FM Community Radio (Guarantee) Limited, a charity company legally registered in St. Helena and limited by guarantee.
