Radio enjoys numerous listeners in Turkey. There are more than 1000 radio stations in the country. (see List of radio stations in Turkey.) The first radio studio was formed in Turkey in Ankara Radio. History The first attempts at radio broadcasting began in 1921 in Istanbul, Turkey. The first radio broadcast in Turkey began on May 6, 1927. In 1927, connection to New York City, London, Berlin, Vienna, Moscow and Tehran was established. In 1945, Turkey's first university radio, ITU Radio, was established and the first state radio, Turkish Radio and Television Corporation, TRT, was established on May 1, 1964. Establishment of private radio stations began in the early 1990s. Internet radio began to be established in the late 1990s. Commercial radio The first radio advertising in Turkey was in 1951. Turkish Radio And Television Corporation
The Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT; Turkish: ) is the national public broadcasting, public broadcaster of Turkey, founded in 1964. TRT was for many years the only television and radio broadcaster in Turkey. Before the introduction of commercial radio in 1990, and subsequently commercial television in 1992, it held a monopoly on broadcasting. More recent deregulation of the Turkish television broadcasting market produced analogue terrestrial television. Today, TRT broadcasts around the world, including in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, the United States, and Australia. Radio And Television Supreme Council
Radio and Television Supreme Council (), also known in short as RTÜK, is the Turkish state agency for monitoring, regulating, and sanctioning radio and television broadcasts. RTÜK was founded in 1994 and is composed of nine members elected by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. RTÜK is located in Ankara and maintains local offices in Istanbul, İzmir and Diyarbakir. Telecommunications and information technology sectors fall under another state agency, the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK). DVB-T2
DVB-T2 is an abbreviation for "Digital Video Broadcasting – Second Generation Terrestrial"; it is the extension of the television standard DVB-T, issued by the consortium DVB, devised for the broadcast transmission of digital terrestrial television. DVB has been standardised by ETSI. This system transmits compressed digital audio, video, and other data in "physical layer pipes" (PLPs), using OFDM modulation with concatenated channel coding and interleaving. Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) is a digital radio international standard, standard for broadcasting digital audio radio services in many countries around the world, defined, supported, marketed and promoted by the WorldDAB organisation. The standard is dominant in Europe and is also used in Australia, and in parts of Africa and as of 2025, countries using DAB/DMB, 55 countries are actively running DAB broadcasts as an alternative platform to analogue FM.
