Rachael McLean (academic)
Rachael Mira McLean is a New Zealand public health physician and academic, and is a full professor at the University of Otago. Her research focuses on the public health consequences of nutritional and dietary choices, and includes the relationship between diet and chronic disease. Academic career McLean completed a Master of Public Health followed by a PhD titled ''Sodium in New Zealand: intake, consumer perceptions, and implications for chronic disease'' at the University of Otago. McLean then joined the faculty of the Department of Preventative and Social Medicine at Otago, rising to associate professor in 2020 and full professor in 2024. The University of Otago () is a public university, public research university, research collegiate university based in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. Founded in 1869, Otago is New Zealand's oldest university and one of the oldest universities in Oceania. The university was created by a committee led by Thomas Burns (minister, born 1796), Thomas Burns, and officially established by an ordinance of the Otago Provincial Council in 1869. Between 1874 and 1961 the University of Otago was a part of the federal University of New Zealand, and issued degrees in its name. Louise Nadine Signal is a New Zealand academic, and is a full professor at the University of Otago, specialising in researching public health policy and promotion, inequities in healthcare, and environmental determinants of health. Academic career Signal has a Bachelor of Arts from Massey University, and a Master of Social Science from the University of Waikato, which she completed in 1983. Her master's thesis was on the evaluation of a marae-based training programme for young people. Signal then completed a PhD titled ''The politics of the Ontario Premier's Council on Health Strategy: a case study in the new public health.'' at the University of Toronto in 1994. St Clair School
St Clair is a coastal residential suburb of Dunedin, New Zealand. It is located on the Pacific Ocean coast five kilometres from the city centre on the southwesternmost part of the coastal plain which makes up the southern part of the urban area, and also climbs the slopes of Forbury Hill immediately to the west of this plain. According to the New Zealand Census, St Clair's population in 2023 was 2,470. Geography St Clair's main geographical features are St Clair Beach and the promontory of Forbury Hill, which rises above the plain. The summit of the hill lies within the grounds of St Clair Golf Course, in the west of the suburb. Forbury Hill's flanks include a large cliff face one kilometre inland from the beach and a rocky headland which juts into the Pacific Ocean. Sue Crengle
Suzanne Marie Crengle is a New Zealand Māori academic, of Kāti Māmoe, Kāi Tahu and Waitaha descent and as of 2020 is a full professor at the University of Otago, specialising in public health medicine. Early life Crengle was born in Waiouru, and grew up in Wellington and Auckland. Her father was in the navy. She attended Mana College, where her parents had to complain to the local MP to have the streaming system changed so that it was possible for her to both be in the top class and take te reo Māōri. Academic career Crengle graduated in medicine from the University of Auckland in 1985. She notes that there were three other Māori students in her class, whereas nowadays a typical cohort might have fifty. Diana Sarfati
Diana Sarfati (born 1967/1968) is a New Zealand cancer researcher and senior public servant. She was formerly head of the Cancer Control Agency from 2019 to 2022 and Director-General of Health from 2022 to 2025. Education and family Sarfati attended medical school at the University of Otago, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 1991. Later, she returned to Otago for postgraduate education, earning a Master of Public Health (with Distinction) in 1998. Her PhD, completed in 2014 at the same university, found that administrative data were adequate for measuring comorbidity in cancer populations and was determined to be an exceptional thesis.
