Race Pond, Georgia
Racepond is an unincorporated community in Charlton County, in the U.S. state of Georgia. History Racepond had its start when the Waycross and Florida Railroad was extended to that point. The community took its name from a nearby natural pond where horse races were conducted in the 1830s. A post office called Racepond was established in 1881, and remained in operation until 1953. Charlton County, Georgia
Charlton County is the southernmost county in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,518. The county seat is Folkston. History Charlton County was created from a portion of Camden County, Georgia, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly on February 18, 1854. The original county seat was at Trader's Hill, until 1901. Additional lands from Ware County, Georgia, were added to Charlton's borders by an 1855 act of the General Assembly. In 1856, an additional legislative act redefined the Charlton–Camden borders again with each county ceding land to the other. The county is named for Robert Milledge Charlton, a U. S. Waycross And Florida Railroad
The Waycross Short Line was the unofficial name of a railroad line built by Henry B. Plant that ran from Waycross, Georgia to Jacksonville, Florida on the St. Johns River. The line through Georgia was chartered by Plant as the Waycross and Florida Railroad and the Florida segment was chartered as the East Florida Railway. The line crossed the Georgia/Florida border just south of Folkston, Georgia at the St. Marys River. History In 1879, Henry B. Plant acquired what became the Savannah, Florida and Western Railway from its previous owner, the bankrupt Atlantic and Gulf Railroad. The Savannah, Florida and Western Railway (which became the main line of the Plant System) ran from Savannah, Georgia across southern Georgia to Bainbridge via Waycross, Valdosta, and Thomasville. Georgia State Route 15
State Route 15 (SR 15) is a state highway that travels south-to-north across the entire length of the U.S. state of Georgia, east of its centerline. This route is part of a multi two-state route 15 that begins at Florida and ends at Georgia at the North Carolina state line. It connects the Florida state line, south-southeast of Folkston with the North Carolina state line, in Dillard, via Folkston, Blackshear, Baxley, Vidalia, Soperton Wrightsville, Sandersville, Greensboro, Athens, Demorest, and Clayton. Georgia State Route 121 (SR 121) is a state highway between Charlton County and Augusta. It is part of a three-state multistate route beginning in Florida and ending in South Carolina. Route description SR 121 begins in rural Charlton County at the Florida state line near the southernmost point in the state. Here, the roadway continues as State Road 121. From the state line, it travels to the north, concurrent with SR 23. This segment of the route is called the Okefenokee Parkway. After passing through St. George, it has a concurrency with US 1/ US 23/ US 301/ SR 4/ SR 15 in Folkston.
