RPM Records (United States)
RPM Records was an American Los Angeles–based record label launched in 1950. This is not the same RPM used by Tony Bennett, nor is it related to labels in the UK and South Africa. RPM was a subsidiary of Modern Records and part of the Bihari Brothers record empire. Ike Turner, who was a talent scout for the Bihari Brothers, arranged for many blues musicians such as Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, and Roscoe Gordon to record for the Biharis. King released many successful singles on the RPM label. Paul Anka released his first single on RPM in 1956. In 1957, the Bihari Brothers announced that they were halting all album releases on both Modern and RPM, and that their released and scheduled albums for Modern and RPM would be issued on their Crown Records label. The catalogs and master tapes were sold to Ace Records (UK) in the 1990s. Jimmy Nelson (singer)
James Nelson (April 7, 1919 – July 29, 2007), known as Jimmy "T99" Nelson, was an American jump blues and rhythm and blues shouter and songwriter. With a recording career that spanned over 50 years, Jimmy "T99" Nelson became a distinguished elder statesman of American music. His best known recordings are "T-99 Blues" and "Meet Me With Your Black Dress On". Nelson notably worked with Duke Robillard and Otis Grand. Career Nelson got his start singing in church. In 1941, he saw a performance by Big Joe Turner while he was visiting Oakland, California, and realized he wanted to sing the blues. Turner taught Nelson about singing, performance and the music business. Nelson, in turn, absorbed the shouting style of his mentor. From 1951 through 1961, Jimmy Nelson and the Peter Rabbit Trio released eight singles with the Bihari Brothers' Modern/RPM label. The Teen Queens
The Teen Queens were an American musical group from the 1950s, most remembered for their hit single " Eddie My Love", which reached No. 14 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart and No. 3 on the R&B Best Sellers charts in March 1956. Biography The group consisted of sisters Betty and Rosie Collins, sisters of Aaron Collins, who was a singer with the doo wop group The Cadets. Aaron Collins wrote their debut song, and the single that became their biggest hit. "Eddie My Love" was released by RPM Records, and, following its success, was followed by a string of other releases. These included "Baby Mine", "Billy Boy", "Red Top", "Rock Everybody" and "I Miss You", but none of these achieved the success of their debut song. Consequently, the group left RPM in 1958 and signed a one record recording contract with RCA Records, who released "Dear Tommy". This also failed to make much of an impact on the charts. Eddie My Love
"Eddie My Love" is a 1956 doo wop song. According to BMI and ASCAP, the song was written by Maxwell Davis (BMI), Aaron Collins, Jr. (ASCAP), and Sam Ling (BMI). Maxwell Davis played sax on the Teen Queens record. Aaron Collins was the brother of the Teen Queens. Sam Ling was an alias of Saul Bihari, co-founder of Modern, RPM, and other labels; Bihari and his brothers regularly attached their names to songwriting credits (without contributing substantially to writing the songs) as a means of getting a cut of the royalties, as was common practice at the time. The Teen Queens were the first to record the song, releasing their rendition on RPM in 1956. It became their biggest selling single, with several follow up records failing to generate the same success. The Chordettes and The Fontane Sisters also released hit versions of "Eddie My Love" in 1956. Johnny "Guitar" Watson
John Watson Jr. (February 3, 1935 – May 17, 1996), often known professionally as Johnny "Guitar" Watson, was an American musician. A flamboyant showman and electric guitarist in the style of T-Bone Walker, his recording career spanned 40 years, and encompassed rhythm and blues, funk and soul music. Watson recorded throughout the 1950s and 1960s with some success. His 1954 instrumental single "Space Guitar" was the first of his recordings to showcase his electric guitar playing. His creative self-reinvention in the 1970s, with funk overtones, saw Watson have hits with "Ain't That a Bitch" and "Superman Lover". His highest charting single was 1977's "A Real Mother for Ya". "Bottle Up and Go" or "Bottle It Up and Go" is a song that is a standard of the blues. Based on earlier songs, Delta bluesman Tommy McClennan recorded "Bottle It Up and Go" in 1939. The song has been interpreted and recorded by numerous artists, sometimes using alternate titles, such as "Step It Up and Go", "Shake It Up and Go", etc. Memphis Jug Band and Sonny Boy Williamson versions In 1932, the earliest version of "Bottle It Up and Go", a hokum blues with jug band accompaniment, was recorded by the Memphis Jug Band, a loose musical collective led by Will Shade and Charlie Burse. "No More Doggin'" is a rhythm and blues song written and originally recorded by blues musician Rosco Gordon in 1952. The song featured Gordon's signature "Rosco Rhythm" piano style which became a precursor to Jamaican ska music. Recording and release Rosco Gordon had originally been associated with the Beale Streeters, a loose coalition of Memphis, Tennessee musicians that also featured Johnny Ace, B.B. King, and Bobby "Blue" Bland, in the late 1940s. In 1951, Gordon was scouted by Ike Turner to record for the Bihari brothers at Modern Records. He reached the ''Billboard'' charts that fall with the single "Saddled The Cow (And Milked The Horse)," released on Modern's subsidiary, RPM Records, which peaked at No. 9 on the Most Played Juke Box R&B Records chart.
