RNA Modification Base
RNA Modification Base (RMBase) is a database of RNA modifications identified from high-throughput sequencing. It contains numerous examples of modifications such as N6-methyladenosine, pseudouridine, 5-methylcytosine, 2′-O-methylation and ~3130 other types of RNA modification. RMBase includes thousands of modifications to messenger RNA, non-coding RNA and microRNA, and also includes information on disease-related SNPs. RNA editing (also RNA modification) is a molecular process through which some cells can make discrete changes to specific nucleotide sequences within an RNA molecule after it has been generated by RNA polymerase. It occurs in all living organisms and is one of the most evolutionarily conserved properties of RNAs. RNA editing may include the insertion, deletion, and base substitution of nucleotides within the RNA molecule. RNA editing is relatively rare, with common forms of RNA processing (e.g. splicing, 5'- capping, and 3'-polyadenylation) not usually considered as editing. RNA-Seq (named as an abbreviation of RNA sequencing) is a technique that uses next-generation sequencing to reveal the presence and quantity of RNA molecules in a biological sample, providing a snapshot of gene expression in the sample, also known as transcriptome. In molecular biology, messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) is a single-stranded molecule of RNA that corresponds to the genetic sequence of a gene, and is read by a ribosome in the process of synthesizing a protein. mRNA is created during the process of transcription, where an enzyme (RNA polymerase) converts the gene into primary transcript mRNA (also known as pre-mRNA).
