A list of Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society shows and other functions arranged chronologically: Timeline *9 December 1839: meeting chaired by David McLaren to ratify Society rules. Among those present were George Stevenson, Dr. John Knott (c. 1806 – 21 October 1850) and William Smillie. *28 October 1840: Show Society founded with McLaren its first President. *6 December 1840: first Show held in the grounds of Fordham's Hotel followed by the first Annual General Meeting of the South Australian Agricultural Society. *2 March 1841: second Show (though it has been reckoned the first), also held behind Fordham's Hotel. *16 February 1842: third Show, held at South Australian Company's schoolroom on North Terrace opposite Government House, between Gawler Place and Stephens Place. Royal Agricultural And Horticultural Society Of South Australia
The Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of South Australia was founded in November 1839 as the South Australian Agricultural Society with the aim of promoting primary industries in the Colony. The Society and its functions were patterned on similar organisations in England, and in its successive incarnations, the organisation has continued to pursue this aim (in the State) to the current day. History Foundation The South Australian Agricultural Society was founded as the result of a public meeting held on 28 October 1839. The original Constitution provided for a President, four Vice-Presidents, Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer and a committee of 18 citizens selected by a formula intended to give representation to the range of members' interests and locations, one-third of whom were to retire annually by rotation. Edward William Andrews
Edward William Andrews (17 May 1812 – 23 February 1877) was a newspaper editor in the early days of the Colony of South Australia. He was born the eldest son of Rev. Edward Andrews, LL.D., a Congregationalist minister of Walworth, London, and started life as a merchant, eventually becoming a member of the London Stock Exchange. He and his family migrated to South Australia on the ''Anna Robertson'', arriving in Adelaide on 20 September 1839. Business In December 1839 he helped found the South Australian Insurance Joint Stock Company, and early in 1840 founded the firm of Gorton & Andrews, merchants. He had a close personal and business relationship with James Frew (for whom Frewville is named) of Frew & Co. Andrews was declared insolvent in 1843 and the company was declared insolvent in 1846. John Langdon Bonython
Sir John Langdon Bonython (; Charles Earle Funk, ''What's the Name, Please?'' (Funk & Wagnalls, 1936). 15 October 184822 October 1939) was an Australian editor, newspaper proprietor, philanthropist, journalist and politician who served as a member of the inaugural federal Parliament, and was editor of the Adelaide daily morning broadsheet, '' The Advertiser'', for 35 years.W. Catherine Helen Spence
Catherine Helen Spence (31 October 1825 – 3 April 1910) was a Scottish-born Australian author, teacher, journalist, politician, leading suffragist, and Georgist. Spence was also a minister of religion and social worker, and supporter of electoral proportional representation. In 1897 she became Australia's first female political candidate after standing (unsuccessfully) for the 1897 Australasian Federal Convention election, Federal Convention held in Adelaide. Called the "Greatest Australian Woman" by Miles Franklin and by the age of 80 dubbed the "Grand Old Woman of Australia", Spence was commemorated on the Australian five-dollar note issued for the Centenary of Federation of Australia.
