RAF Skipton-on-Swale
Royal Air Force Skipton-on-Swale or more simply RAF Skipton-on-Swale is a former Royal Air Force List of former Royal Air Force stations, satellite station operated by RAF Bomber Command during the World War II, Second World War. The station was located at Skipton-on-Swale west of Thirsk (near the present-day junction of the A61 road, A61 and A167 road, A167), North Yorkshire, England. The village of Sandhutton is located just to the east. RAF Skipton-on-Swale was a sub-station of RAF Leeming. History The airfield opened in autumn 1942, becoming operational in May 1943. Skipton-on-Swale was originally a No. 4 Group RAF, 4 Group facility and first hosted No. 420 Squadron RCAF, 420 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), which moved to RAF Middleton St. George in October 1942. Sandhutton
Sandhutton is a small village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It lies about west of Thirsk on the A167. It has been referred to as Hutton, Hutton (Sand), and Sand Hutton. The name derives from Old English which translates as a sharply projecting piece of sandy ground with an enclosure, farmstead or village upon it. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the district of Hambleton, it is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council. East of the village, on the road to Carlton Miniott, is the Sand Hutton Cross which is now a listed monument. The cross marked the point at which three parishes met and is designated due to the fact that it has survived despite intensive arable farming in the area. In 2017, a solar farm was installed to the east of the village. 433 Tactical Fighter Squadron
433 Squadron is a unit of the Royal Canadian Air Force. It operates CF-18 Hornet fighter jets from CFB Bagotville in Quebec, Canada. As of 2024, its Commanding Officer is Lieutenant Colonel Aaron Dhillon. History No. 433 Squadron formed at RAF Skipton-on-Swale on 25 September 1943, but was without aircraft for nearly two months. When these arrived they were the latest version of the Handley Page Halifax, the Mk III, and No. 433 worked up on them to begin operations on 2 January 1944. For the next year the squadron was continuously operational on Halifaxes over the Continent by night. In January 1945 the Halifaxes were replaced by Avro Lancaster Mk Is, and No. 433 used these for three months, by which time the war in Europe had come to an end. No. 433 was not disbanded but, as part of No. 1 Group, flew trooping flights from Germany and Italy, bringing back troops and POWs. The Vickers Wellington (nicknamed the Wimpy) is a British twin-engined, long-range medium bomber. It was designed during the mid-1930s at Brooklands in Weybridge, Surrey. Led by Vickers-Armstrongs' chief designer Rex Pierson, a key feature of the aircraft is its geodetic airframe fuselage structure, which was principally designed by Barnes Wallis. The Avro Lancaster, commonly known as the Lancaster Bomber, is a British World War II, Second World War heavy bomber. It was designed and manufactured by Avro as a contemporary of the Handley Page Halifax, both bombers having been developed to the same specification, as well as the Short Stirling, all three aircraft being four-engined heavy bombers adopted by the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the same era. The Handley Page Halifax is a British Royal Air Force (RAF) four-engined heavy bomber of the Second World War. It was developed by Handley Page to the same specification as the contemporary twin-engine Avro Manchester. The Halifax has its origins in the twin-engine ''H.P.56'' proposal of the late 1930s, produced in response to the British Air Ministry's Specification P.13/36 for a capable medium bomber for "world-wide use." The H.P.56 was ordered as a backup to the Avro 679, both aircraft being designed to use the Rolls-Royce Vulture engine. Royal Air Force East Moor or RAF East Moor is a former Royal Air Force satellite station located north of York, North Yorkshire and south-east of Easingwold, North Yorkshire, England. The airfield was initially controlled by the Royal Air Force until the site was transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 before being handed back in November 1945. History East Moor was opened in 1942 and was originally a 4 Group facility and first hosted No. 158 Squadron RAF which moved from RAF Driffield on 6 June 1942.
