R82 (South Africa)
The R82 is a provincial route in South Africa that connects Johannesburg with Kroonstad via Vereeniging and Sasolburg. It starts just south of the M1 Johannesburg Municipal Highway's interchange with the N12 Southern Bypass (Uncle Charlie's Interchange), going south, meeting the R59, R54, R42 & R28 routes at Vereeniging before crossing the Vaal River into the Free State & proceeding to Kroonstad. It is an alternative, but longer route to the N1 national route between Johannesburg & Kroonstad. Route The R82 is an alternative route to the N1 highway from Johannesburg to Kroonstad, with the N1 highway being a shorter and more direct route by about 20 kilometres. Nigel is a small gold mining town in Gauteng Province, South Africa, south-east of Johannesburg. The town is at the south-eastern edge of the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and the East Rand. Background A farmer, shopkeeper and prospector, Petrus Johannes Marais, having read Sir Walter Scott's '' The Fortunes of Nigel'' at the time (see Nigel), formed the Nigel Gold Mining Company after the discovery of gold on the farm Varkensfontein in 1886. The R550 is a Regional Route in Gauteng, South Africa that connects Johannesburg South with Devon via Katlehong and Nigel. Route Its western terminus is a junction with the R82 and R554 roads in Johannesburg South, just south of Kibler Park and north of Walkerville (east of Lenasia). From there, the R550 goes south-east for 15 kilometres, following the Klip River, to reach a T-junction near the Klipriver Business Park. At this junction, the R550 turns eastwards and meets the R59 highway at an interchange just after. The R554 is a Regional Route in Gauteng, South Africa. The road connects the southern suburbs of Soweto with Springs on the East Rand via Lenasia, Alberton and Brakpan. Route Its western terminus is an interchange with the M68 and the N12 Moroka Bypass, just south of Soweto (south of Protea Glen), as Abu Baker Asvat Drive. The route runs south to Lenasia and then turns east in the town centre. It intersects with the R553 and passes over the N1 adjacent to the Olifantsvlei Nature Reserve east of Lenasia.
