They are designated with the letter "R" followed by a three-digit number. They serve as feeders connecting smaller towns to the national and provincial routes. Designation as a regional road does not necessarily imply any particular size of road; they range from gravel roads (like the R340 between Plettenberg Bay and Uniondale) to multi-lane freeways (like the R300 near Cape Town). Although most regional roads are maintained by provincial road authorities, this is not universally the case; in provinces which lack capacity, some may be under the control of the National Roads Agency (SANRAL), and in urban areas they may be ordinary streets under the control of the municipal roads department. Limpopo
Limpopo is the northernmost province of South Africa. It is named after the Limpopo River, which forms the province's western and northern borders. The capital and largest city in the province is Polokwane, while the provincial legislature is situated in Lebowakgomo. The province is made up of 3 former homelands of Lebowa, Gazankulu and Venda and the former parts of the Transvaal province. Vaalwater is a small town situated on the Mokolo River in the Limpopo province of South Africa. Geography Location The town, unlike other towns in the Limpopo province, is not located on a national road, of which the nearest one is at Nylstroom/Modimolle. The R510 is a Regional Route in South Africa that connects Rustenburg with the Stockpoort Border with Botswana via Thabazimbi and Lephalale. Route It runs almost north-south for most of its length. The R33 is a provincial route in South Africa that connects Pietermaritzburg with Lephalale via Greytown, Paulpietersburg, Carolina, Belfast and Vaalwater. It is a very long road, passing through 3 provinces (Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal). Route Limpopo The R33 begins south of Lephalale, at a junction with the R510 next to The Junction Restaurant & Golf Range. It starts by going eastwards to cross the Mokolo River. After crossing the Mokolo River, the R33 turns south-east and heads for 85 kilometres, through the Grootwater Nature Reserve, to the town of Vaalwater, where it forms a junction with the R517.
