The R49 (also sometimes known as the R47) is a provincial route in North West, South Africa that connects Mahikeng with the Botswana border at Kopfontein near Gaborone, via Zeerust. Route The R49 begins in the town centre of Mahikeng, at a junction with the N18 National Route and the R503 Road. It begins as Shippard Street, going eastwards to form the northern border of the Mafikeng Game Reserve. From the N18 junction, it goes east, then north-east, for 61 kilometres, through Ottoshoop, to meet the N4 National Route (Platinum Highway) adjacent to Zeerust Solar Power Station. The N4 joins the R49 and they are one road north-east for 2 kilometres into the town of Zeerust as Church Street. In the Zeerust CBD, at the President Square junction (just before Zeerust Shopping Centre), the R49 leaves Church Street (N4; Platinum Highway) and becomes the road northwards. A concurrency in a road network is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. Platinum Highway
The Platinum Highway is part of the N4, and a major South African highway built under concessions with a private contractor. In 2001, the project was voted Infrastructure Deal of the Year by Project Finance International Magazine. It took eight years to complete. The highway is part of the Trans-Kalahari Corridor, which links four African countries (Mozambique, South Africa, Botswana and Namibia) and two oceans (the Indian and Atlantic). The contract had tougher concession terms than were seen in previous contracts. The ''Platinum Highway'' is the section of the N4 from the Skilpadshek Border with Botswana, through Zeerust, Swartruggens, Rustenburg and Brits, to the interchange with the N1 in Pretoria (Tshwane). N4 (South Africa)
The N4 is a national route in South Africa that runs from Skilpadshek on the Botswana border, past Rustenburg, Pretoria, eMalahleni and Mbombela, to Komatipoort on the Mozambique border. It forms the South African section of the Trans-Kalahari Corridor, which runs from Walvis Bay to Maputo, meaning that it links the east and west coasts of Southern Africa. Since the completion of the A2 through Botswana, the entire Corridor is now a world-class standard highway; it features at least one carriageway in each direction of high-speed traffic plus a paved shoulder for its entire length. The South African section can be divided into two parts with Pretoria in the middle. Ottoshoop
Ottoshoop is one of the small towns in the Mahikeng Local Municipality in the North West Province of South Africa, situated 20km from the city of Mahikeng on the way to the town of Zeerust. Residents serve the scanty needs of a few locals, underwater divers and railway users. During the town's boom years from 1879 to 1880, Ottoshoop was, however, the commercial capital of South Africa. This spirit of the town still lives on in today's commercial capital of Africa – Johannesburg. The N18 is a national route in South Africa which runs from Warrenton through Vryburg and Mahikeng to Ramatlabama on the border with Botswana. Mahikeng
Mafikeng, officially known as Mahikeng and previously Mafeking (, ), is the capital city of the North West province of South Africa. Close to South Africa's border with Botswana, Mafikeng is northeast of Cape Town and west of Johannesburg. In 2001 it had a population of 49,300. In 2007 Mafikeng was reported to have a population of 250,000, of which the CBD constituted between 69,000 and 75,000.
