The R356 is a Regional Route in South Africa that connects the R46 near Ceres with Loxton by way of Sutherland and Fraserburg. The route's south-eastern origin is the R355 near that route's origin at the R46 in the Western Cape. It heads north-east for 110 kilometres, crossing into the Northern Cape, before it reaches a junction with the R354 from the south. The two roads run together for 50 kilometres, through the Verlatekloof and Rooikloof Passes over the Komsberg Range, to reach Sutherland. The R354 leaves Sutherland heading north-west, but the R356 heads north-east to Fraserburg Fraserburg is a town in the Karoo region of South Africa's Northern Cape province. Ceres, Western Cape
Ceres is the administrative centre and largest town of the Witzenberg Local Municipality in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Ceres serves as a regional centre for the surrounding towns of Wolseley, Tulbagh, Op-die-Berg and Prince Alfred Hamlet. It is situated in the ''Warmbokkeveld'' (Afrikaans: "warm antelope field") Valley about 170 km north-east of Cape Town. Ceres is located at the north-eastern entrance to Michell's Pass and was the old route north between Cape Town and Johannesburg, which was later replaced by the N1 highway, which traverses the Breede River Valley to the south. Loxton, Northern Cape
Loxton is a town in the Karoo region of South Africa's Northern Cape province. Within the Ubuntu Local Municipality of the Pixley ka Seme District Municipality It is in one of the major wool-producing and one of the largest garlic-producing areas in South Africa. With a population of 1,053 in 2011, the area is quiet and sparsely populated. Afrikaans is the most widely spoken language in the town. History Loxton was originally a farm called Phizantefontein, which was owned by A.E. Loxton, whom the town is named after. The farm was bought from him in 1899 by the Dutch Reformed Church for £7,500 so as to establish a parish for local farmers. The town is believed to have been named after A.E Loxton due to a £50 donation he made to fund the salary of the town's first Dutch Reformed Church minister. Sutherland, Northern Cape
Sutherland is a town with about 2,841 inhabitants in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It lies in the western Roggeveld Mountains in the Karoo. History Sutherland was founded in 1855 as a church and market town to serve the area's sheep farmers. By 1872 the town had a population of 138 registered citizens living in 19 houses. The large Dutch Reformed church in the centre of Sutherland was built in 1899. During the Anglo Boer War the church was used as a fort by garrisoned British soldiers. During the war a number of engagements between British and Boer forces occurred in the town. In one such engagement a force of 250 Boer commandos attacked the local British garrison for 10 hours. The ruins of a fort can be found on the outskirts of town on the hill called Rebelskop. This was named after this engagement. Economy Major economic activities include tourism and sheep farming. Fraserburg
Fraserburg is a town in the Karoo region of South Africa's Northern Cape province. It is located in the Karoo Hoogland Local Municipality. The town has some of the coldest winters in South Africa. The nearest towns are Williston, Sutherland, Loxton and Leeu-Gamka, all of which are more than 100 km distant. A particularly good example of a corbelled house can be found in the town, there are others in the district. The town is also well known for the large number of unique and well-preserved fossil finds that litter the surrounding area. History The earliest known inhabitants of the area were the San people and their artefacts and rock paintings can still be found in the area. The R355 is a Regional Route in South Africa that connects the R46 near Ceres with Springbok via Calvinia. The route's northern terminus is the N7 and N14 at Springbok, Northern Cape. It heads south-east. After 140 kilometres it reaches the R358. The routes are co-signed for a few kilometres heading south. They enter the Western Cape. The R355 then emerges and heads east-south-east, returning to the Northern Cape, to meet the R357. The two routes become co-signed heading east, and enter Loeriesfontein together. From Loeriesfontein, the R355 diverges heading south, before veering east to reach Calvinia. At Calvinia, the route meets the R27 and the two routes become co-signed heading west.
