R. Verman
Ratna Verman Shetty (1947 – 30 July 2019), usually credited as R. Verman, was an Indian art director. Early life Born in Mangalore, Verman is an alumnus of J. J. School of Art, Mumbai. After completing his education he started his own publicity designing and cine advertising business company called ‘Takshila’. During this time his major clients were Navketan films and Verman worked on production houses of films like Jewel Thief and Guide. Career While working as a publicity designer Verman became interested in art direction and worked as an assistant of noted art director Sudhendu Roy for few years before becoming a full-fledged art director. ''Jewel Thief'' is a 1967 Indian Hindi-language spy thriller heist film directed by Vijay Anand. The film stars Ashok Kumar, Dev Anand, Vyjayantimala and features four bond girl-like actresses portrayed by Tanuja, Helen, Faryal and Anju Mahendru, with Nazir Hussain and Sapru appearing in supporting roles. ''Guide'' is a 1965 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama film directed by Vijay Anand and produced by Dev Anand, who co-starred in the film with Waheeda Rehman. Based on R. K. Narayan's 1958 novel '' The Guide'', the film narrates the story of the freelance guide Raju (Anand) and his meeting with Rosie (Rehman), who is the wife of a wealthy archaeologist. A 120-minute U.S. version titled ''The Guide'' was written by Pearl S. Buck and directed and produced by Tad Danielewski. For the US version, Devanand had insisted that Waheeda Rehman be cast as a heroine, but his advice was not heeded to. This version flopped badly in America. Sudhendu Roy (1921–1999) was a noted Indian film director, art director and production designer in Hindi cinema, most known for his realistic art direction in auteur Bimal Roy's films, like '' Sujata'' (1959), '' Madhumati'' (1959) and '' Bandini'' (1963), and glitzy work in films Subhash Ghai's '' Karz'' (1980) and '' Karma'' (1986) to Yash Chopra's ''Silsila'' (1981), '' Chandni'' (1989) and '' Lamhe'' (1991).
