''R.N. Kao: Gentleman Spymaster'' is a biography of R. N. Kao, Rameshwar Nath Kao, the founding chief of India's external intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW). Written by Nitin A. Gokhale, the book was published by Bloomsbury India in November 2019. The book is being adapted into a movie by Karan Johar. Background Nitin A. Gokhale was informally approached to write a book on Kao. Through interviews with people who worked with Kao or were trained by him, Kao's declassified recordings and other official documents, meetings with his family, Gokhale managed to complete the book in 65 days. The National Security Advisor (India), National Security Advisor of India, Ajit Doval, has written the foreword of the book. The book is only one of two books and the first-full-fledged book to be written about RN Kao. Ajit Kumar Doval, Kirti Chakra, KC (born 20 January 1945) is an Indian bureaucrat and spymaster, who is currently serving as the National Security Advisor of India since 2014. A retired Indian Police Service officer of the Kerala cadre, he had previously served as Director of the Intelligence Bureau, Director of the Intelligence Bureau (India), Intelligence Bureau in 2004–05, after heading its operations wing for a decade. Official Secrets Act (India)
The Official Secrets Act of 1923 is India's anti-espionage act held over from the British colonial period. It states clearly that actions which involve helping an enemy state against India are strongly condemned. It also states that one cannot approach, inspect, or even pass over a prohibited government site or area like an electrical substation. According to this Act, helping the enemy state can be in the form of communicating a sketch, plan, model of an official secret, or of official codes or passwords, to the enemy. Prosecution and penalties Punishments under the Act range from three years to life imprisonment (if the intent is to declare war against India - section 5).
