Synopsis Charlie Jardim's career as a criminal lawyer in Melbourne is in trouble after a major outburst in court. In order to leave this behind him he accepts a prosecution brief from a friend for a case in the remote Victorian town of Dauphin. The victim, Matthew Lanegan, was caught up in the illegal abalone trade, and as Jardim digs into the case he sees the town close up against him. Jock Serong
Jock Serong is an Australian writer. Serong grew up in Melbourne’s bayside suburbs and completed his secondary education at Xavier College in Kew. From years 4-8 he attended Xavier’s Kostka Hall junior campus in Brighton. He graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1995 with an LLB. He now resides in Port Fairy in regional Victoria with his wife and children. He is a former lawyer, and also majored in archaeology at university. He co-edited the short-lived journal ''Great Ocean Quarterly'' established in 2013. Text Publishing is an Australian publisher of fiction and non-fiction, based in Melbourne, Victoria. Company background Text Media was founded in Melbourne in 1990 by Diana Gribble and Eric Beecher, along with designer Chong Weng Ho and others, with a small book publishing division known as Text Publishing. Michael Heyward joined in 1992, and the small publishing house became independent in 1994. When Text Media was taken over by Fairfax Media in 2004, Michael Heyward and his wife Penny Hueston entered into a joint venture with Scottish publisher Canongate. Maureen and Tony Wheeler, founders of Lonely Planet, bought Canongate's share in Text in 2011, making it a wholly Australian-owned company. In 2012, Text launched a series of Australian classics, republishing out-of-print works. In January 2025, Text announced that it had been acquired by Penguin Random House. Ned Kelly Awards
The Ned Kelly Awards (named for bushranger Ned Kelly) are Australia's leading literary awards for crime writing in both the crime fiction and true crime genres. They were established in 1996 by the Crime Writers Association of Australia to reward excellence in the field of crime writing within Australia. The genre of crime writing has long been popular, but it was not until the early 1990s that a local growth of writing within the genre occurred in Australia. By the middle of the decade support for the field had grown sufficiently that it was decided to establish the Ned Kelly Awards. The awards are affectionately referred to as 'The Neddies' within the community.
