Queensland Government Architect
The Queensland Government Architect is a position within the public service of Queensland, Australia with responsibility for the design of government buildings in Queensland. It was formerly known as the Queensland Colonial Architect. The position is located within the Queensland Department of Housing and Public Works. An architect is a person who plans, designs, and oversees the construction of buildings. To practice architecture means to provide services in connection with the design of buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings that have human occupancy or use as their principal purpose. John Smith Murdoch
John Smith Murdoch (29 September 186221 May 1945) was a Scottish architect who practised in Australia from the 1880s until 1930. Employed by the newly formed Commonwealth Public Works Department in 1904, he rose to become chief architect, from 1919 to 1929, and was responsible for designing many government buildings, most notably the Old Parliament House, Canberra, Provisional Parliament House in Canberra, the home of the Parliament of Australia from 1927 to 1988. Personal life John Smith Murdoch was born in Cassieford Farm, Forres, Scotland. He had a "dry and quiet" personality and was frugal in both his professional and private life. Murdoch never married, and there are only two official known photographs of him. Raymond Clare Nowland
Raymond Clare Nowland (1894–1973) was an architect in Australia. Many of his buildings are listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. Early life Raymond Clare Nowland was born in Sydney in 1894. Nowland studied at Sydney Technical College and the Architectural Association in London. Career On returning to Australia, Nowland was employed by the Commonwealth Government from 1920 to 1926. Nowland then moved to Queensland, practicing as an Architect and Town planner in Brisbane. Nowland joined the architectural office of the Department of Public Works in the Queensland Government in November 1932 where he became a senior architect in 1938. He produced the most significant buildings of his career between 1932 and 1942. Nowland also had some private practice in which he proposed developments for Mount Tamborine and housing estates in Coorparoo for property developer Robert George Oates. Malcolm Middleton (architect)
Malcolm Bruce Middleton (born 31 December 1973) is a Scottish musician and member of indie band Arab Strap. He has also released seven solo studio albums and three albums performing under the pseudonym Human Don't Be Angry. Early life Middleton was born in Dumfries but raised in Falkirk, Scotland. He attended Graeme High School. He played bass, guitar and sometimes sang in several bands in the 1990s, including Purple Bass Plectrum, Rabid Lettuce, Pigtube and The Laughing Stock. Career Arab Strap In 1995, Middleton and Aidan Moffat, after bonding over their love of musical artists such as Smog and Will Oldham, began making music under the name "Arab Strap". The band released six studio albums before splitting up in 2006. Andrew Baxter Leven
Andrew Baxter Leven (2 February 1885 – 1966) was a Scottish-born architect in Australia. As chief architect in the Queensland Department of Public Works, he designed many of Queensland's public buildings, some of which are now heritage-listed. Early life Leven was born in Montrose, Angus in 1885.''Who's Who in Australia, 1921-1950'', p. 424 Leven trained as an architect in Scotland and then immigrated to Queensland in 1910 on the recommendation of friends. Alfred Barton Brady
Alfred Barton Brady (1856–1932) was an engineer and architect in Queensland, Australia. He was one of Queensland's most important early engineers and was particularly known for his bridge design. He was the Queensland Colonial Architect and many of his buildings and structures are now heritage-listed. Early life Alfred Barton Brady was born on 1 February 1856 in Manchester, England. He was educated in private schools. Architecture career On 15 January 1872 at age 15, Brady commenced his training as a pupil of Charles William Green, an architect and civil engineer of Manchester and Liverpool. John James Clark
John James Clark (23 January 1838 – 25 June 1915) was an Australian architect, who began his career at the age of 14 in the office of the Colonial Architect's Office in Melbourne, immediately after his family migrated from Liverpool in 1852. Clark's 30 years in public service, followed by 33 in private practice, produced some of Australia's most notable public buildings, and at least one in New Zealand. He is most famous as the designer of Melbourne's Old Treasury Building, Melbourne, Old Treasury Building aged only 19.
