Queenie Allen
Queenie Mary Allen (December 1911 — 2 August 2007), later Queenie Webber, was an English badminton player from the 1930s into 1950s. She won the women's doubles title at the All England Open Badminton Championships in 1949 with Betty Uber. She also won international competitions in Denmark, Scotland, South Africa, Ireland, and France. Career Allen competed in the 1934 All England Badminton Championships. At the 1948 South African Badminton Championships, Allen won in the women's doubles category, with her partner Betty Uber. In 1947, 1948, and 1949, she won the women's singles category at the Irish Open; she also won the women's doubles category at the Irish Open in 1947 and 1949 with Betty Uber, and the mixed doubles category in 1949 with Harold Marsland. Badminton
Badminton is a racquet sport played using racket (sports equipment), racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net (device), net. Although it may be played with larger teams, the most common forms of the game are "singles" (with one player per side) and "doubles" (with two players per side). Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in a yard or on a beach; formal games are played on a rectangular indoor court. Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it within the opposing side's half of the court. Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net. Play ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor or if a fault has been called by the umpire, service judge, or (in their absence) the opposing side. All England Open Badminton Championships
The All England Open Badminton Championships is the world's oldest badminton tournament, held annually in England. With the introduction of the Badminton World Federation, BWF's latest grading system, it was given BWF Super Series, Super Series status in 2007, upgraded to Super Series Premier status in 2011. The world's first open tournament was held in the English town of Guildford in 1898, the success of which paved the way for the All England's inaugural edition, which was held at London's Horticultural Halls in 1899. Although the inaugural edition consisted of just the doubles format, the singles were introduced from the second edition onward. Betty Uber
Elizabeth Uber (2 June 1906 – 30 April 1983, born Elizabeth Corbin) was an English badminton and tennis player. Career Betty Uber won 13 titles at the All England Open Badminton Championships, 1 of them in women's singles, 4 in women's doubles and 8 in mixed doubles. She was inducted into the World Badminton Hall of Fame as an Inaugural Member. Personal life In 1925, she married Herbert Uber. Uber Cup Her surname "Uber" is used for the Uber Cup, the world women's team badminton championship, because she had the idea of hosting the women's event similar to men in New Zealand back in 1950. Irish Open (badminton)
The Irish International or Irish Open in badminton is an international open held in Ireland since 1902 and is thereby one of the oldest badminton tournaments in the world. It was however interrupted by the two World Wars. This tournament is currently a part of the European Badminton Circuit and takes place at the end of November every year as part of the home nations loop of international tournaments that include the Scottish Open and the Welsh Open in consecutive weeks. The tournament for most part and in recent years has been an International Challenge rated event. The recent exception was in 2012, 2017 & 2018 when the tournament was downgraded to International Series due to funding. Eddy Choong
Dato' Choong Ewe Beng (29 May 1931 – 28 January 2013) was a Malaysian badminton player. He was David Choong's brother and they played men's doubles together. Early life Choong Ewe Beng, also known as Eddy, was born on May 29, 1931, and was the third son of a wealthy family in Penang. His parents were named Dato' Choong Eng Hai and Datin Ho Guat Im. Choong first went to primary and secondary school in Penang before moving to England at the turn of the 1950s to study law and medicine. His passion for the sport quickly eclipsed his studies and Eddy later said his studies were “long forgotten”. In the UK, Eddie was much attracted to the Jim Russell School of racing driving and enrolled, but parental pressure forced him to re-think his priorities. However, his passion for driving took him to other aspects of motor sports, and when back on Penang, he revelled in grass track, hill climbs and karting.
