Queendom (film)
''Queendom'' is a 2023 documentary film, directed and co-written by Agniia Galdanova. It portrays the Russian performance artist Gena Marvin, who attracts the attention of the public and the government of her country with her provocative works, in which she transforms her own body into gigantic, menacing silhouettes. It had its world premiere at the South by Southwest on March 11, 2023, and was released on June 14, 2024 in United States by Greenwich Entertainment. The series won a 2024 Peabody Award. It was shortlisted in Best Documentary Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards on 17 December 2024, but was not nominated. David France (writer)
David France (born 1959) is an American investigative reporter, non-fiction author, and filmmaker. He is a former ''Newsweek'' senior editor, and has published in ''New York'' magazine, ''The New Yorker'', ''The New York Times Magazine'', '' GQ'', and others. France, who is gay, is best known for his investigative journalism on LGBTQ topics. France has been nominated for an Oscar and multiple Emmy Awards. He has also earned a George Foster Peabody Award, a Lambda Literary Award, and the Baillie Gifford Prize for nonfiction. In June 2007, France appeared on ''The Colbert Report'' to discuss the scientific basis that homosexuality is genetic. Gena Marvin (born ) is a Russian performance artist known for their surreal and creature drag. Their art focuses on themes of identity, self-acceptance, different forms of beauty, and the surreal. Marvin is the star of the Peabody Award winning documentary Queendom (2023). Early life and education Gena Marvin was born in Magadan, Russia. She grew up practicing drag makeup in secret in her parents' house. She said she was bullied and tormented growing up in her small village. This, alongside the tale of Slender Man, would become a major inspiration for her artwork. She attended two colleges, and said she experienced homophobia at both. She was expelled from the second college a year before graduating. Göteborg Film Festival (GFF), formerly Göteborg International Film Festival (GIFF), known in English as the Gothenburg Film Festival, formerly Gothenburg International Film Festival, is an annual film festival in Gothenburg, Sweden and the largest film event in Scandinavia. Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (BNFF), or PÖFF (Pimedate Ööde filmifestival), is an annual film festival held since 1997 in Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia. Reykjavík International Film Festival (RIFF; ) is an international film festival held annually in Reykjavík, Iceland. The festival lasts 11 days each year and emphasizes young talents. The Munich International Film Festival () is the largest summer film festival in Germany and second only in size and importance to the Berlinale.
