The south coast of Western Australia comprises the Western Australian coastline from Cape Leeuwin to Eucla. This is a distance of approximately , fronting the Great Australian Bight and the Southern Ocean. Windy Harbour
Windy Harbour is a rural locality of the Shire of Manjimup in the South West region of Western Australia. It is surrounded by D’Entrecasteaux National Park. It is located 27 km south of Northcliffe, on the south coast of Western Australia east of Augusta and west of Nornalup. It lies just east of Point D'Entrecasteaux. Fishing, snorkelling and whale watching are the major attractions of Windy Harbour. Coastal zone The area of Windy Harbour coastal zone was studied before it became part of the national park. Settlement The history of the settlement is tied in with the forestry communities inland from the harbour and the rock lobster fishing industry. The area was also the location of coastal fishing huts, which have been at times removed due to their not being approved by local authorities. Sandy Island (Windy Harbour)
Sandy Island is a island lying about off the coast of Windy Harbour in south-west Western Australia, and near Point D'Entrecasteaux. It is part of D'Entrecasteaux National Park and is an important breeding site for seabirds. Description The island is aligned north-west to south-east, about long by wide, flat and mainly sandy. There is an area of limestone and unconsolidated dune at the north-western end. The southern coastline is composed of migmatitic rocks. Most of the island is vegetated with ''Poa'' tussock grassland, pigface and '' Lobelia anceps''. Some 46 plant species have been recorded. Birds The island has been identified by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area because it supports a high proportion of the nesting population of flesh-footed shearwaters (with up to 300,000 breeding pairs) and has supported relatively high numbers of breeding fairy terns. D'Entrecasteaux National Park
D'Entrecasteaux National Park is a national park in Western Australia, south of Perth. The park is named after the French Admiral Antoine Bruni d'Entrecasteaux who was the first European to sight the area and name Point D'Entrecasteaux in 1792. The park received 168,497 visitors through 2008–2009. Description The park stretches from Black Point in the west to Long Point in the east and extends inland as far as . Black Point is made of basalt columns from a lava flow that occurred 135 million years ago. An interesting feature in the park is Yeagarup dune, a mobile long sand dune found to the west of Lake Jasper. The park contains a great variety of scenery, including beaches, sand-dunes, coastal cliffs, coastal heath and pockets of karri forest. The Cow and The Calf are basalt rock formations off the south coast of Western Australia. They are 26 km south east of Windy Harbour and can be seen from there on a clear day. They are particularly notable for their high abundance of abalone and as a popular destination for both commercial fishing and sports fishing. Western Australia is the second largest country subdivision in the world. As of 2022, based on the latest Collaborative Australian Protected Areas Database report, it contains separate land-based protected areas with a total area of , accounting for just over 30 percent of the state's land mass. By area, Indigenous Protected Areas account for the largest part of this, almost 67 percent while, by number, nature reserves hold the majority with two-third of all land-based protected areas being nature reserves.
