Quadracycle
A quadracycle (also spelled quadricycle) is a four-wheeled human-powered land vehicle. It is also referred to as a quadcycle, pedal car or four-wheeled bicycle amongst other terms. Quadracycles have been in use since 1853 and have grown into several families of vehicles for a variety of purposes, including tourist rentals, pedal taxis, private touring, mountain and industrial use. Nomenclature There is no consensus amongst manufacturers of four-wheeled, human-powered vehicles as to what this class of vehicles should be called, although ''quadracycle'' is the most commonly used term. Rhoades Car
Rhoades Car, founded in 1991, is located in Hendersonville, Tennessee, United States. The company was founded by David Rhoades, and he served as its president until his death in late 2009 from heart disease at age 60. He was succeeded as president by Bill Pomakoy in 2010 who renamed the company "Rhoades Car International". Ownership changed hands again on October 1, 2015, and was part of Mobile Specialty Group, Inc. In January 2020, the assets were purchased by Par Bikes, LLC. Par Bikes also purchased VierBike, a company with a similar, but more luxurious four wheel bike design. International Surrey Company
International Surrey Company Ltd., also called "The Surrey Company", is a quadracycle manufacturer based in La Marque, Texas, United States. The company began production in the mid-1980s and specializes in providing products for the quadracycle rental market. History The company was formed as a quadracycle rental operator in 1970 under the name ''The Surrey Company'' with locations in Kissimmee, Florida and Galveston, Texas. The company also operated an affiliate under the name ''Beach Bike Rentals''. They rented out the French Gitane Rosalie and the Italian bolt-together framed Selene Surrey. The renting of quadracycles was found to be very hard on the imported models and the quadracycles suffered equipment failures as a result. The Surrey Company made improved replacement parts, such as awnings and frames for these models and suggested improvements to the European manufacturers. Sociable
The sociable or buddy bike or side by side bicycle is a bicycle that supports two riders who sit next to one another, in contrast to a tandem bicycle, where the riders sit fore and aft. The name "sociable" alludes to the relative ease with which the two cyclists can speak with each other, unlike on the tandem. History ''Bicycling through Time'' by Paul and Charlie Farren has a picture of a sociable with a frame under each rider and two wheels between them from 1897. The Ford Museum in Detroit has a similar sociable on display. More modern single framed sociables may have started with Australian cyclist Hubert Opperman, although in its basic form the design has been around for longer, since the end of the 19th century. Human-powered land vehicles are land vehicles propelled over ground by human power, The main ways to support the weight of a human-powered land vehicle and its contents above the ground are rolling contact; sliding contact; intermittent contact; no contact at all as with anything carried; or some combination of the above. Velocar was the name given to velomobiles made in the 1930s and 1940s by Mochet et Cie of Puteaux, France and colloquially to the company's recumbent bicycles. was the inventive maker of lightweight powered cyclecars (Le P'tit Auto) and pedal-powered cars (quadricycles), mainly two-seaters, built on a tubular-steel chassis with bicycle-sized wheels, variable gears, and aerodynamic bodywork, in effect a faired-in "sociable". The popularity of the little cars declined in the late 1930s as cheaper, powered cars became available, only to rise rapidly when petrol became almost unobtainable during World War II, 1939–1945. However, Mochet's stroke of genius was to make what was the first performance recumbent bicycle, or ''vélo couché'', using a design that was based on half of his four-wheeled Velocar.
