Qorlortorsuaq
Qorlortorsuaq is a village in the Nanortalik district, in the Kujalleq municipality in southern Greenland, located at the site of the largest waterfall in the country; the waterfall also goes by the name of Qorlortorsuaq. In 2020, the town had only 4 inhabitants. The population consists mostly of farmers. Qorlortorsuaq also houses the only trout farm in the country Qorlortorsuaq is a location of the Qorlortorsuaq Dam, Qorlortorsuaq hydroelectric dam. The hydropower plant is part of the focus of the government of Greenland to replace fossil fuelled power plants with renewable energy, and is only one of a number of hydroelectric projects planned for construction. The plant has made it possible to decommission the three aging diesel generators, so called "bunker fuel generators" made from old ship engines, that previously provided electricity to the towns. Qorlortorsuaq Dam
Qorlortorsuaq Dam is a hydroelectric dam near Qorlortorsuaq in the Nanortalik district of the Kujalleq municipality in southern Greenland. It has a capacity of 7.6 MW and it generates power for the neighbouring towns of Qaqortoq and Narsaq. History The construction of the power plant started in December 2003 and was completed in October 2007. It was built by consortium of E. Pihl & Son AS (51%), YIT (34%), and Landsvirkjun (15%). Landsvirkjun operates the power plant until 2012, when operation will be transferred to the Kujalleq municipality. The design and engineering was performed by Icelandic companies Verkís and Efla. Kujalleq
Kujalleq (Greenlandic language, Greenlandic: , ) is a municipality on the southern tip of Greenland, operational from 1 January 2009. The administrative center of the municipality is in Qaqortoq (formerly called Julianehåb). Creation The municipality consists of the former municipalities of southern Greenland, each named after the biggest settlement: * Nanortalik Municipality * Narsaq Municipality * Qaqortoq Municipality In addition to the area of these municipalities, uninhabited parts of the former municipalities of Paamiut Municipality, Paamiut and Ammassalik Municipality, Ammassalik were added to the new administrative entity. Nanortalik
Nanortalik (, ), formerly Nennortalik, is a town in Nanortalik Island, Kujalleq municipalities of Greenland, municipality, southern Greenland. With 1,072 inhabitants as of 2024, it is the List of cities and towns in Greenland, eleventh-largest town in the country. The name ''Nanortalik'' means "Place of Polar bear, Polar Bears" or "Place Where the Polar Bears Go" (from ). It is the southernmost town in Greenland with a population of over 1,000. History Because of its location, this area was one of the first parts of Greenland settled by the Norsemen, Norse and one of the last settled by the Inuit. The town was founded in 1770 as Nennortalik. In 1797, a permanent trading depot was set up in Nanortalik by traders from Julianehåb.
