QinetiQ Pershore
QinetiQ Pershore is a Business Park and Trials Centre operated by QinetiQ. The site is located near the village of Throckmorton, Worcestershire, England. History The site was created during 1933/4 for use by the Royal Air Force as a training station under the name of RAF Pershore. The following units were posted here at some point: * No. 1 Aircraft Preparation Unit RAF * No. 1 Ferry Unit RAF * No. 10 (Advanced) Flying Training School RAF * No. 23 Operational Training Unit RAF with Vickers Wellingtons. * No. 50 Gliding School RAF * No. 1516 (Beam Approach Training) Flight RAF * No. 1681 (Bomber) Defence Training Flight RAF * Radar Research Flying Unit RAF (RRFU). - previously at RAF Defford The RAF station closed down during 1978. QinetiQ ( as in '' kinetic'') is a British defence technology company headquartered in Farnborough, Hampshire. It operates primarily in the defence, security and critical national infrastructure markets and run testing and evaluation capabilities for air, land, sea and target systems. As a private entity, QinetiQ was created in April 2001; prior to this its assets had been part of Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA), a now-defunct British government organisation. While a large portion of DERA's assets, sites, and employees were transferred to QinetiQ, other elements were incorporated into Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), which remains in government ownership. Throckmorton, Worcestershire
Throckmorton is a small village and civil parish in the administrative district of Wychavon, in the county of Worcestershire, England. The village lies 3.5 miles northeast of Pershore, five miles north-west of Evesham and 9 miles southeast of the city of Worcester. At the 2001 census, it had a population of 200. The church The village is ancient and the earliest extant remains are parts of the church and bell-tower (now a chapelry), dating from the 13th century. Excavations discovered the stone foundations of an even earlier church on the site. The church has no electricity and is lit by gas-lamps and candles. The Vickers Wellington (nicknamed the Wimpy) is a British twin-engined, long-range medium bomber. It was designed during the mid-1930s at Brooklands in Weybridge, Surrey. Led by Vickers-Armstrongs' chief designer Rex Pierson, a key feature of the aircraft is its geodetic airframe fuselage structure, which was principally designed by Barnes Wallis. Development had been started in response to Air Ministry List Of Air Ministry Specifications, Specification B.9/32, issued in the middle of 1932, for a bomber for the Royal Air Force. The Royal Signals and Radar Establishment (RSRE) was a scientific research establishment within the Ministry of Defence (MoD) of the United Kingdom. Royal Air Force Defford, or more simply RAF Defford, is a former Royal Air Force station located northwest of Defford, Worcestershire, England. History Second World War At the outbreak of the Second World War, Croome Court and its surrounding estate was requisitioned by the Ministry of Works. The main Palladian house was initially leased for a year to the Dutch Government as a possible refuge for Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands to escape the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. However, evidence shows that they only stayed for two weeks at most. Construction of RAF Defford was started at the outbreak of war, and completed in 1941.
