Pētõr Damberg
Pētõr Damberg (, , (); March 9, 1909, Sīkrags – April 25, 1987) was a Latvian Livonians, Livonian linguist, poet and teacher. He graduated from a teacher's school in Jelgava and worked as a Livonian language teacher. He worked on developing Livonian grammar, wrote several poems in Livonian and translated books into Livonian. His most important works were Livonian school books, which became the most common Livonian language books in use for teaching. After World War II he worked as a private teacher. He died on April 25, 1987, and was buried in a graveyard in Baltezers, Ādaži Municipality, Baltezers. Sīkrags
Sīkrags (Livonian language, Livonian: ''Sīkrõg'') is a small village in Kolka Parish, Talsi Municipality, Latvia. It is one of the twelve Livonians, Livonian villages on ''Līvõd rānda'' - the Livonian Coast and one of the oldest. Sīkrags was mentioned in writing as early as 1387 and served as one of the most important small ports in northern Kurzeme during the 17th century. During World War I, German troops built a station of the Stende-Ventspils narrow gauge railway near the village. During the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet occupation of Latvia Sīkrags was one of the few places on the sealed-off Livonian Coast where local fishing was permitted. In 1955, a small fish processing plant was built in the village, but was closed ten years later, dealing a blow to the growth of the village. The is situated on the west side of the village (). Livonians
The Livonians, or Livs, are a Balto-Finnic people indigenous to the Livonian Coast, in northwestern Latvia. Livonians historically spoke Livonian language, Livonian, a Uralic language closely related to Estonian language, Estonian and Finnish language, Finnish. It was believed that the last person to have learned and spoken Livonian as a First language, mother tongue, Grizelda Kristiņa, died in 2013. In 2020, however, it was reported that newborn Kuldi Medne had become the only living person who speaks Livonian as their first language. As of 2010, there were approximately 30 people who had learned it as a second language. Historical, social and economic factors, together with an ethnically dispersed population, have resulted in the decline of Livonian identity, with only a small group surviving in the 21st century. Jelgava
Jelgava () is a state city in central Latvia. It is located about southwest of Riga. It is the largest town in the Semigallia region of Latvia. Jelgava was the capital of the united Duchy of Courland and Semigallia (1578–1795) and was the administrative center of the Courland Governorate (1795–1918). Jelgava is situated on a fertile plain rising only above mean sea level on the right bank of the river Lielupe. At high water, the plain and sometimes the town as well can be flooded. It is a railway center, and is also a host to the Jelgava Air Base. Its importance as a railway centre can be seen by the fact that it lies at the junction of over 6 railway lines connecting Riga to Lithuania, eastern and western Latvia, and Lithuania to the Baltic Sea. Livonian Language
Livonian ( or ) is a Finnic language whose native land is the Livonian Coast of the Gulf of Riga, located in the north of the Kurzeme peninsula in Latvia but also used to be spoken in the Salaca River valley. Although its last known native speaker died in 2013, a child, Kuldi Medne, born in 2020, is reported to be a native speaker of Livonian. Her parents are Livonian language revival activists Jānis Mednis and Renāte Medne. Also, there are about 40 reported L2 speakers and 210 having reported some knowledge of the language. Possibly uniquely among the Uralic languages but similarly to Latvian and Lithuanian, Livonian has been described as a pitch-accent language (or ''restricted tone language'', see below). Baltezers, Ādaži Municipality
Baltezers is a village in Ādaži Parish, Ādaži Municipality in the historical region of Vidzeme, and the Riga Planning Region in Latvia. It is sandwiched between the lakes of Lielais and Mazais Baltezers 4,4 km south of the municipal center of Ādaži. The A1 highway stretches through the village.
