Päivi Halonen Award
The Päivi Halonen Award () is an ice hockey trophy awarded seasonally by the Finnish Ice Hockey Association to the best defenceman in the Naisten Liiga (ice hockey), Naisten Liiga, called the Naisten SM-sarja during 1982 to 2017. It is named after Päivi Virta, previously Halonen, former SM-sarja defender and trailblazer for women's ice hockey in Finland, who won fifteen Aurora Borealis Cup, Finnish Championship titles during her career, four more than any other player in league history. Naisten Liiga (ice Hockey)
The is the national premier league for women's ice hockey in Finland. Founded by the Finnish Ice Hockey Association as the Naisten Suomen mestaruus, SM-sarja (NSMs; ) in 1982, it was known as the Naisten Liiga (NSML;) from 2017 until being rebranded as Auroraliiga in 2024. The league comprises approximately 225 players across nine teams. Kiekko-Espoo Naiset, Kiekko-Espoo has been the dominating force of the Auroraliiga in the 21st century, winning seventeen Finnish Championships from 1999 to 2025. Ilves Naiset, Tampereen Ilves is the second most successful club in the league's history, with ten championship titles. Ilves are the only organization to have iced a team in every season since the league's inception. 2019–20 Naisten Liiga Season
The 2019–20 Naisten Liiga season was the thirty-seventh season of the Naisten Liiga, the premier level of women's ice hockey in Finland, since the league’s establishment in 1982. The postseason was cancelled by the Finnish Ice Hockey Association on 12 March 2020 in response to public health concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 Aurora Borealis Cup Final between Kiekko-Espoo and KalPa was scheduled to begin on 14 March 2020. With the cancellation of the remainder of the season, the 2019–20 season became the first and only Naisten Liiga season to date in which the Finnish Championship was not awarded. League changes Season format The season format designated for the 2019–20 season was a modified version of the format established for the 2018–19 season. Minttu Tuominen
Minnamari "Minttu" Tuominen (; born 26 June 1990) is a Finnish ice hockey player. She plays in the Auroraliiga (called Naisten Liiga until 2024) with Kiekko-Espoo. A member of the Finnish national ice hockey team since 2008, she has earned medals at three Winter Olympic Games and five IIHF Women's World Championships. Playing career Finland Tuominen played for the Espoo Blues Naiset in the Naisten SM-sarja (NSMs; rebranded as Naisten Liiga in 2017) and attended Makelanrinne Sports High School in Helsinki. At Makelanrinne, she captained the ice hockey team after being named one of the school's top athletes of 2007 and 2008. Liiga
The Liiga, colloquially called the Finnish Elite League in English or FM-ligan in Swedish, is the top professional ice hockey league in Finland. The league comprises 16 teams from all around Finland with relegation and promotion between the Mestis. The winner of the Liiga playoffs is awarded the Kanada-malja at the end of each season. Teams from the Liiga participate in the International Ice Hockey Federation, IIHF's annual Champions Hockey League (CHL), competing for the European Trophy. Participation is based on the strength of the various leagues in Europe (excluding the European/Asian Kontinental Hockey League). The Liiga was established in 1975 to replace the former SM-sarja, which was fundamentally an amateur competition. JYP Naiset
JYP Naiset or JYP Jyväskylä Naiset is a Finnish ice hockey team in the Naisten Mestis. Their home is the Jyväskylän harjoitusjäähalli ('Jyväskylä training ice hall') in Jyväskylä, Central Finland. JYP Naiset have won the Aurora Borealis Cup three times, in 1997, 1998, and 2016. The team is the successor of two teams: JyP Hockey Team (HT) Naiset, which existed from 1989 to 2000 and used the name JYP Naiset during the period 1997 to 2000, and Jyväskylän Hockey Cats (JyHC), which was founded in 1996 and was known as the Cats Jyväskylä during 2004 to 2009 and JYP Naiset from 2009 to present. They are the women's representative team of the ice hockey club JYP Juniorit ry and are loosely affiliated with JYP Jyväskylä of the Liiga.
