Pál Steiner
Pál Steiner (born 13 March 1953) is a Hungarian politician, who served as the mayor of Belváros-Lipótváros (5th district of Budapest) from 2002 to 2006. He was elected member of the National Assembly (MP) from the Budapest Regional List of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) in 2002, holding the seat until 2014. Career He is of Jewish origin. He spent his childhood in Mezőkövesd and Ferencváros. After mechanical works in trade industry, he attended the Eötvös Loránd University, where earned a degree of jurist in 1986. Steiner joined the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party (MSZMP) in 1986, then became a founding a member of the Socialist Party in October 1989. He served as chairman of the party's national ethics committee between 1998 and 2004. Belváros-Lipótváros
District V is the heart of Budapest and the political, financial, commercial and touristic center of Hungary. The name of the district is Belváros-Lipótváros (English: Inner City – Leopold Town), which refers to the two historical neighbourhoods that is located in the district; Belváros ("Inner City") and Lipótváros ("Leopold Town"). Inner City is the old town of Pest, while Leopold Town was established in the early 19th century, and became the political and financial centre of Hungary in the early 20th century when the Hungarian Parliament was built. The two neighbourhoods were originally the 4th (Inner City) and 5th (Leopold Town) districts of Budapest until 1950 when the two districts were merged and number IV was given to Újpest ("New Pest"). 2006 Hungarian Local Elections
Local elections took place in Hungary on 1 October 2006 amidst a period of protests and demonstrations against the government of Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány. In many cities, demonstrators urged people not to vote for the MSZP candidate at the elections, and Fidesz made heavy use of the fact that Gyurcsány had admitted lying in its campaign leaflets and phone calls. In response, Gyurcsány insisted in a speech he held in Szeged on 15 September that the local elections would have no bearing on his party staying in power, and "those who don't want a war between the government and the city should know whom to vote for". Before the elections, the polling firm Szonda Ipsos had predicted a victory for candidates of the main opposition party Fidesz – 34% of the people asked said they would vote for Fidesz, while only 22% voiced a preference for the MSZP. The history of the Jews in Hungary dates back to at least the Kingdom of Hungary, with some records even predating the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin in 895 CE by over 600 years. Written sources prove that Jewish communities lived in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary and it is even assumed that several sections of the heterogeneous Hungarian tribes practiced Judaism. Jewish officials served the king during the early 13th century reign of Andrew II. From the second part of the 13th century, the general religious tolerance decreased and Hungary's policies became similar to the treatment of the Jewish population in Western Europe. The Ashkenazi of Hungary were fairly well integrated into Hungarian society by the time of the First World War.
