''Kolonel Bunker'' is a 1996 Albanian historical film directed and written by Kujtim Çashku. Starring Agim Qirjaqi and Anna Nehrebecka, the film covers Enver Hoxha's mass construction of bunkers in Albania. French and Polish companies produced the film alongside Albania's Orafilm. Plot Enver Hoxha ruled Albania with an iron fist for nearly 40 years, and for a long time Albania was the only Maoist regime and by far the most isolationist society in Europe—politically, psychologically and physically. This film is about Colonel Muro Neto, a character based on the historical engineer Josif Zagali, the man Hoxha charged with constructing the bunkers throughout the country which ostensibly protected Albania from its enemies both without and within. He became known as "Kolonel Bunker." Kujtim Çashku (born 5 August 1950) is an Albanian film director and screenwriter who has won numerous awards at international film festivals, including the Critics Prize at the 1996 Bastia Mediterranean Film Festival and the UNESCO Award at the 1998 Venice Film Festival for ''Colonel Bunker'', the Best Screenplay Award, the FIRESCI Prize and the Silver Pyramid at the 2005 Cairo International Film Festival as well as the Bronze Palm at the Valencia, Spain, Valencia Festival of Mediterranean Cinema for ''The Magic Eye'', and the CEI Award at the Trieste Film Festival for his "brave commitment to the development of Albanian cinema". List Of Albanian Submissions For The Academy Award For Best Foreign Language Film
Albania has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1996, but only a regular basis since 2008. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non- English dialogue. It was not created until the 1956 Academy Awards, in which a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since. The Albanian submission is decided by a committee appointed by the Albanian Ministry of Culture. Thirteen Albanian films have been submitted for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but none of them has yet been nominated for an Oscar.
