Purple Line (Kolkata Metro)
Purple Line is a rapid transit metro line of the Kolkata Metro in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. A stretch from Joka to Majerhat of this line is operational as of 2025. This line is planned to span from IIM-Joka in the southern region of Greater Kolkata to Eden Gardens in the Central Kolkata. It has interchanges with Blue Line at Park Street and Esplanade and with Green Line at Esplanade. Background and history Previously, the stretch from Thakurpukur to Majerhat was surveyed as a branch line of the circular railway, and a metro line from Majerhat to Dakshineswar via Sealdah (interchange with Green Line) was planned. Green Line, also known as East–West Metro, is a rapid transit metro line of the Kolkata Metro in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Esplanade Metro Station
Esplanade is an underground interchange metro station on the North–South corridor of the Blue Line and on the East–West corridor of the Green Line of Kolkata Metro. This station, which is the biggest in the city, is located in the Esplanade neighbourhood of Kolkata, at the northern end of Chowringhee Road/Jawaharlal Nehru Road near New Market and the Oberoi Grand hotel. It opened in 1984 as part of what is now the Blue Line. The station is re-designed to be the largest station of the metro system and will function as the interchange station between Blue, Green and Purple Lines. Geography Of Kolkata
Kolkata is located in the eastern part of India. It has spread linearly along the banks of the Hooghly River. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has an area of 205 square kilometres. The city is near sea level, with the average elevation being 17 feet. The whole area is in the Ganges Delta which starts within 100 km south of the city. Most of the city was originally marshy wetlands, remnants of which can still be found especially towards the eastern parts of the city. Eden Gardens is an international cricket stadium in Kolkata (Calcutta), India. Established in 1864, it is the oldest and second-largest cricket stadium in India and third-largest in the world. Majerhat Metro Station
Majerhat metro station is an operational metro station on Purple Line of Kolkata Metro. It is the terminal station of the first phase 1 of this line and the first and only station built over an existing railway network, from Joka to Majerhat. The line was sanctioned in India's railway budget of 2010–11, but due to various hurdles, construction was delayed and missed multiple deadlines.
