Pulau Besar (Johor)
Besar Island ( ms, Pulau Besar), is an island in Mersing District, Johor, Malaysia. Name Geology The island, which is surrounded by Rawa, Sibu and Tinggi Island, is characterised by quiet, clean beaches of powdery white sand and crystal-clear azure waters. To preserve the unspoiled marine life, the Government has gazetted it as a marine park to protect around 60 species of marine life from any activities that can harm their natural habitats within around the island. The island's highest point rises some above the sea level. Rich hues of wild vegetation are dappled throughout with the lush greens of the coconut palms and tropical jungles. Mersing District
Mersing District is one of the 10 districts district in Johor, Malaysia. Its seat is located at Mersing Town. Etymology The “Mersing” name is derived from the Chinese “Mau Sheng Port” (茂盛港) since 1880 and further simplify to Mersing. Mersing's Chinese name was renamed to “Feng Sheng Port” (丰盛港), with the meaning of good harvest. There are also said that Mersing's name is derived from Sikh traders who named Amir Singh and Men Singh. Geology Beside the mainland area, the district also consists of 36 islands. Geography With an area of 2,838 km2, Mersing District is the third largest district in Johor, which covers 14.6% area of the state. Johor
Johor (; ), also spelled as Johore, is a state of Malaysia in the south of the Malay Peninsula. Rawa Island
Rawa Island ( ms, Pulau Rawa) is a coral island in Mersing District, Johor, Malaysia. Nearby islands include Harimau and Mensirip. "Rawa" is the local term for white doves, which are abundant in the island. Rawa is a relatively small island. There are no proper roads, only a few walkways. One side of the island is a beach covered with white sand, while the other side has a rocky vertical cliff. The water is clear. There are many sea and land creatures such as fishes, squids, jellyfish, octopuses, Malayan sea eagles, and reptiles. Also sharks Blacktip reef sharks can be found feeding in the sea off rawa. Rawa's waters are home to an abundance of corals. There are two resorts on the island: Rawa Island Resort and Alang's Rawa. Sibu Island
Sibu Island ( ms, Pulau Sibu) is an island group in Mersing District, Johor, Malaysia. History The area was declared as a marine park in 1993. Geography It consists of several islands, namely Sibu Besar Island, Sibu Tengah Island, Sibu Kukus Island and Sibu Hujung Island. There are four main beaches on the eastern side of Sibu. Sibu Besar, the main island, is approximately 6 km long and 1 km wide, and for the most part covered by tropical vegetation. Geology The island mostly consists of pyroclastic rock with ashy characteristics. Demographics On the southern end of Sibu Besar Island, there is a small fishing village called Kampong Duku with a population of fewer than a hundred people (about 40 families). Activities The main leisure activities on the island are watersports such as snorkelling and diving, and numerous coral reefs are close to hand. Tinggi Island
Tinggi Island ( ms, Pulau Tinggi) is an island in Mersing District, Johor, Malaysia. Name The island was nicknamed the "General's Hat" (將軍帽) by Chinese seamen hundreds of years ago. Geography The island is located about 20 nautical miles (37 km) southeast of Mersing Town, on the east coast of Johor mainland. Geology The island rises up to 600 meters above sea level at a peak named Mount Semundu. The interior of the island is mostly covered with secondary lowland Dipterocarp rainforest. It has fresh waters, fruits, rattan, timber and a sheltered harbour and coral reefs which abound with prolific marine life. It has a long coastline and white sandy beaches dotted with caves. Mersing
Mersing ( Terengganu Malay: ''Merecing'' or ''Ngesing'') is a town, mukim and the capital of Mersing District, Johor, Malaysia. As of 2010, the town has an estimated population of 70,894.
