Public Service Commission (Fiji)
The Public Service Commission (PSC) is a Statutory body, statutory agency in Fiji within the Ministry of Civil Service (Fiji), Ministry of Civil Service that is responsible for overseeing standards of all Civil service, civil servants. Established in 1970 by Fiji's constitution, the Commission is led by a chairperson and consists of not less than three and not more than five members; all appointed by the President of Fiji on the advice of the Constitutional Offices Commission (Fiji), Constitutional Offices Commission. Fiji, officially the Republic of Fiji, is an island country in Melanesia, part of Oceania in the South Pacific Ocean. It lies about north-northeast of New Zealand. The Fijian coup d'état of December 2006 was a coup d'état in Fiji carried out by Commodore (rank), Commodore Frank Bainimarama against Prime Minister of Fiji, Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and President Josefa Iloilo. It was the culmination of a 2005–06 Fijian political crisis, political crisis that had begun the previous year when the Qarase government introduced three bills to the Parliament of Fiji, Fijian Parliament. Rishi Ram
Rishi Ram (born 17 August 1947) is a Fijian civil servant and former diplomat of Indian descent. From 2007 to 2009 he was Chairman of the Public Service Commission. He was the first ethnic Indian to head the PSC. Ram served as Deputy Secretary of the PSC from June 1990 to April 1993. He was Secretary for Women and Multi-Ethnic Affairs from 1993 to 1994, and for Urban Housing and Development from 1994 to 2001, when he served briefly as Ambassador to Japan, until 2002. He served again as Secretary for Women from 2002 to 2004. Early life Ram was born in Ba in 1952 and attended St Teresa's Primary School and Khalsa Secondary School. Hector Hatch
Hector Rex Hatch (6 February 1936 – 14 April 2016) was a Fijian boxer, politician, and civil servant. He represented Fiji as a boxer at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. There, he competed in the welterweight category, losing 5–0 on points in the first round to Nicolae Linca of Romania who subsequently won the gold medal. Hatch served as Minister for Public Enterprises and Public Sector Reform in the interim Cabinet formed by Laisenia Qarase in the wake of the 2000 Fijian coup d'état. He held office till an elected government took power in September 2001. While visiting New Zealand on 4 January 2007, the Interim Military Government (which had seized power in a coup d'état on 5 December 2006) named Hatch to head the Public Service Commission, replacing Stuart Huggett, who was dismissed for non-cooperation with the military regime. 2022 Fijian General Election
General elections were held in Fiji on 14 December 2022 to elect the 55 members of Parliament. The elections took place following the passage of controversial electoral amendments. In addition to a struggling economy, significant campaign issues included the national debt, ethnic tensions and tackling poverty. During the preliminary count, the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) app displaying the results experienced a glitch, prompting FEO to take down the app temporarily. Once the app was back in operation, the vote tally showed the ruling FijiFirst party leading, resulting in five opposition parties demanding a recount and for the counting process to cease. 2009 Fijian Constitutional Crisis
In April 2009, Fiji underwent a constitutional crisis when the Court of Appeal ruled that the 2006 Fijian coup d'état had been illegal. The Court dismissed the Interim Cabinet led by Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama that had governed Fiji since the coup. However, President Josefa Iloilo announced on a nationwide radio broadcast that he was abrogating the Constitution. He dismissed all judges and constitutional appointees, and reinstated Bainimarama and his cabinet. He also instituted emergency rule which increased police powers and allowed media censorship.
