Public Forces Of Costa Rica
The Public Force of Costa Rica () is the national law enforcement agency of Costa Rica, whose duties include internal security and border control. History On 1 December 1948, the President of Costa Rica, José Figueres Ferrer, abolished the Costa Rican military after his victory in the Costa Rican Civil War. In a ceremony at the national capital of San José, Figueres symbolically broke a wall with a mallet, symbolizing an end to the military's existence. In 1949, the abolition of the Costa Rican military was introduced in Article 12 of the Constitution of Costa Rica. The budget previously dedicated to the military is now dedicated to security, education and culture. Costa Rica maintains Police Guard forces. Air Vigilance Service
There is officially no Air Force of Costa Rica; the only air wing in existence is attached to the Public Force of Costa Rica. Currently this unit, officially called Air Vigilance Service ( (SVA)), also called the Air Service (''Servicio Aéreo''), does not operate any armed military aircraft. Its main air bases located in three different points, San José (Base 2) being the main operations center. Mission and Functions The SVA's mission is to: ''"Provide air support in security actions carried out by police forces, in humanitarian missions, transfers of government officials; Provide security and surveillance in the country's airports to protect domestic and foreign citizens."'' Special Intervention Unit (Costa Rica)
The Special Intervention Unit () is a special forces unit under the control of Costa Rica's Department of Intelligence and Security. It has been described as being a company-sized commando unit. The unit is tasked with performing missions that deal with counterterrorism, hostage rescue, counter drug trafficking, and riot control. The UEI was formed in 1982 after a group of operatives went to train with Israeli Special Forces that were in Panama. Civil Guard (Spanish: ''Guardia Civil'') of Costa Rica was a gendarmerie type force responsible for both limited national defense and internal security missions.
