Provost (civil)
Provost is a title held by the civic heads of local governments in Scotland. It is similar in use to the title of mayor in other parts of the English-speaking world. In the 32 current unitary councils in Scotland, the title is often used for the convenor or civic head of a council, elected by its members to chair meetings and to represent the council. While convenor and depute convenor are the titles used in statute for this position, councils are generally permitted to choose their own titles for their civic heads. However, in the cities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow, the title is specified in law as Lord Provost, who also performs the role of lord-lieutenant for the area. The title of provost is derived from the French term '' prévôt'', which has origins in the Roman Empire. In the past, it was associated with the principal magistrates of Scotland's burghs, but it has since been used in a range of local authorities and community councils, as well as former ...

Jan Provost
Jan Provoost, or Jean Provost, or Jan Provost (1462/65 – January 1529) was a Belgian painter born in Mons. Provost was a prolific master who left his early workshop in Valenciennes to run two workshops, one in Bruges, where he was made a burgher in 1494, the other simultaneously in Antwerp, which was the economic centre of the Low Countries. Provost was also a cartographer, engineer, and architect. He met Albrecht Dürer in Antwerp in 1520, and a Dürer portrait drawing at the National Gallery, London, is conjectured to be of Provost. He married the widow of the miniaturist and painter Simon Marmion, after whose death he inherited the considerable Marmion estate. He died in Bruges, in January 1529. The styles of Gerard David and Hans Memling can be detected in Provoost's religious paintings. The ''Last Judgement'' painted for the Bruges town hall in 1525 is the only painting for which documentary evidence identifies Provost. Surprising discoveries can still be made: in 1971 an ...

Provoste
Yasna Provoste Campillay (born 16 December 1969) is a Chilean teacher and Christian Democrat politician of Diaguita descent, who served as minister during the presidencies of Ricardo Lagos and Michelle Bachelet. In 2008, after frauds committed by the civil servant Franka Grez, Provoste began to be questioned by parliamentarians of the then centre-right opposition ― Alianza por Chile— for not having been aware of that omission, that is, the systematic appropriation and concealment which Grez practiced in the four years where she operated (2004−2008). Thus, on 14 April, the Chilean Senate ―by 20 votes over 18― found her guilty of the loss of more than US$ 600 million in the so-called "Subsidies case" ( Spanish: ), and was disqualified from holding public office for five years. By the other hand, Grez was sentenced to eleven years in prison for embezzlement and diversion of funds to her relatives and close friends, actions that were estimated at $CLP 310 million. ...

William Provost (Guilliame Provoost) (fl. 1556–1607) was a Protestant and a merchant who lived in Antwerp, then a city in the Netherlands.
