Prospero (plant)
''Prospero'' is a genus of bulbous flowering plants in the family (biology), family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae (also treated as the family Hyacinthaceae).Stevens, P.F. (2001 onwards),Asparagales: Scilloideae, ''Angiosperm Phylogeny Website'', retrieved 2014-02-25 It is distributed in Europe, around the Mediterranean, and through the Middle East to the Caucasus. Description Species of ''Prospero'' grow from bulbs, the leaves and flowers appearing in the autumn and dying down in spring. The leaves are relatively narrow. Each bulb produces one to four flowering stems (scape (botany), scapes) bearing dense racemes of pink to violet flowers. The long tepals are not joined together. The stamens have filaments coloured like the tepals and short purple anthers. The dark brown seeds are more-or-less oblong. Systematics The genus ''Prospero'' was included in a posthumously published work including names and descriptions by Richard Anthony Salisbury, Richard Salisbury in 1866. ... Prospero Battagliae
''Prospero battagliae'' is an flowering plant of the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae endemic to Crete, Greece. This autumn-flowering plant produces nodding pale violet blooms on slender stems after its grass-like leaves emerge. First collected in 1981 from Mesa Lasithi in Crete at an elevation of about 860 metres, it was formally recognized as a distinct species in 2000 and is characterized for its distinctive wine-red leaf bases and rose-tinted bulb flesh. Description ''Prospero battagliae'' grows from a nearly spherical to underground bulb 1.1–2.8 cm in diameter, with rose-tinted flesh and enclosed in a brown papery . From this bulb arise branched roots and, before flowering in autumn, the plant produces between four and nineteen narrow, grass-like leaves—typically eight to fifteen—each 18–20 cm long and about 1.5–2 mm wide at the base, which often shows a wine-red tint. One to three erect, leafless flowering stems (), roughly 1.2&nb ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

''Prospero talosii'' is an autumnal flowering plant of the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae endemic to the small Dia Island near Crete, Greece. The species is polyploid, and has the largest chromosome number in the genus. Fewer than 50 individuals are known in the wild, and the species is considered Critically Endangered An IUCN Red List critically endangered (CR or sometimes CE) species is one that has been categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. Prospero Rhadamanthi
''Prospero rhadamanthi'' is a species of flowering plant of the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae endemic to Crete, Greece. It is a diploid species in the ''Prospero autumnale'' cryptic species complex. This delicate autumn-flowering plant produces pale pink nodding flowers on slender stems after its grass-like leaves emerge. First collected in 1996 from Petres Gorge near Karoti in Crete at low elevations (5–80 metres), it was recognized as a distinct species in 2000. Description ''Prospero rhadamanthi'' is a bulbous perennial that develops from a nearly spherical to underground bulb measuring about 1.6–2 cm in length and 1.3–1.8 cm in width, enclosed within a brown papery . In autumn, before the flowers open, the plant produces between five and fourteen slender, grass-like leaves up to 20 cm long and 1.2–2 mm wide. Soon after, one or two leafless flowering stems (), each about 1 mm thick, rise to a height of 12–16 cm and carr ... Prospero Minimum
''Prospero minimum'' is an autumnal flowering plant of the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae that is endemic to Crete, Greece. It is a diploid species in the ''Prospero autumnale'' cryptic species complex. This tiny autumn-flowering plant is among the smallest members of the squill family, with thread-like leaves less than 1 mm wide and delicate pink star-shaped flowers. It grows on limestone rubble near Imbros Gorge and was recognized as a distinct species in 2000 when scientists documented its uniquely diminutive size compared to related plants. Description The subspherical bulb, scarcely 1.8 cm long, is wrapped in a brown, papery and gives rise to just a few roots. In late summer the plant produces extremely fine, grass-like leaves only 0.5–1 mm across and up to 10 cm long; because these leaves appear before the flowers the growth habit is called . One or two wiry, leafless stems ( 4–10 cm tall then bear a loose spike () of three to ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Prospero Idaeum
''Prospero idaeum'' is an autumnal flowering plant of the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae endemic to Crete, Greece. It is a diploid species in the ''Prospero autumnale'' cryptic species complex. This plant produces star-shaped pale pink blooms on slender stalks after its grass-like leaves emerge. Found only on Mount Ida in Crete at elevations around 1,400 metres, it was recognized as a distinct species in 2000 after careful study separated it from similar autumn squills. Description The subterranean bulb is roughly spherical to broadly egg-shaped and about 2–3 cm across, wrapped in a rust-coloured tunic. In late summer it sends up a tuft of seven to fourteen narrow, grass-like leaves (2–7 mm wide, 11–15 cm long) that emerge before the flowers—a habit termed . Shortly afterwards two or three slender, leafless flower stalks () rise 10–18 cm high, each carrying a loose of seven to fifteen star-shaped, pale pink flowers. Individual measur ... Prospero Hierapytnense
''Prospero hierapytnense'' is an flowering plant of the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae that is endemic to Crete, Greece. This autumn-flowering plant produces nodding rosy-pink blooms on slender stems that emerge after its grass-like leaves appear. First collected in 1981 from the Kavousi Gorge in eastern Crete at elevations of 100–230 metres, it was formally recognized as a distinct species in 2000 and is distinct among its relatives for its unique chromosome count. Description ''Prospero hierapytnense'' arises from a small, ovoid underground bulb 1.5–2 cm long and 0.9–2 cm wide, its flesh pale pink to white and enclosed in a brown papery . From the base emerge branched roots and, in autumn before flowering, six to nine narrow, grass-like leaves up to 10–12 cm long and 1–2 mm wide. When in bloom, one or two leafless flowering stems () 7–15 cm tall and about 1.2–1.5 mm thick carry between six and fourteen nodding flo ... Prospero Hanburyi
Prospero ( ) is a fictional character and the protagonist of William Shakespeare's ''The Tempest''. Character Twelve years before the play begins, Prospero is usurped from his position as the rightful Duke of Milan by his brother Antonio, who puts Prospero and his three-year-old daughter Miranda to sea on a "rotten carcass" of a boat to die. Prospero and Miranda survived and found exile on a small island inhabited mostly by spirits. Prospero learned sorcery from books, and uses it to protect Miranda. Before the play begins, Prospero freed the magical spirit Ariel from entrapment within "a cloven pine". Ariel is beholden to Prospero after he is freed from his imprisonment inside the pine tree. Prospero then takes Ariel as a slave. Prospero's sorcery is sufficiently powerful to control Ariel and other spirits, as well as to alter weather and even raise the dead: "Graves at my command have waked their sleepers, oped, and let 'em forth, by my so potent Art." - Act V, scene 1. ...
