John Otterbein Snyder
John Otterbein Snyder (August 14, 1867 – August 19, 1943) was an American ichthyologist and professor of zoology at Stanford University. History As a student he met David Starr Jordan who inspired him to enter zoology. He eventually became a zoology instructor at Stanford University and served there from 1899 until 1943. He went on several major collecting expeditions aboard the in the early 1900s and organized the U.S. National Museum's fish collection in 1925. The same year he also declined the directorship there so he could return to Stanford. He was a long-term member of the California Academy of Sciences and worked for the California Bureau of Fisheries. He wrote many articles and papers as well as describing several new species of sharks. Cisco (fish)
The ciscoes (or ''ciscos'') are salmonid fish that differ from other members of the genus in having upper and lower jaws of approximately equal length and high gill raker counts. These species have been the focus of much study recently, as researchers have sought to determine the relationships among species that appear to have evolved very recently. The term ''cisco'' is also specifically used of the North American species '' Coregonus artedi'', also known as lake herring. In previous taxonomic classifications, the ciscoes have been identified as a subgenus ''Leucichthys'' of the genus ''Coregonus''. Endemism is the state of a species being found in a single defined geographic location, such as an island, state, nation, country or other defined zone; organisms that are indigenous to a place are not endemic to it if they are also found elsewhere. The freshwater whitefish are fishes of the subfamily Coregoninae, which contains whitefishes (both freshwater and anadromous) and ciscoes, and is one of three subfamilies in the salmon family Salmonidae. Apart from the subfamily Coregoninae, the family Salmonidae includes the salmon, trout, and char species of the subfamily Salmoninae, and grayling species of the subfamily Thymallinae. The Bear Lake whitefish ''Prosopium abyssicola'' is a salmonid fish endemic to Bear Lake on the Utah-Idaho border. It is one of three species of Prosopium endemic to Bear Lake, the other two being the Bonneville whitefish and the Bonneville cisco. The species is listed as a ''Wildlife Species of Concern'' by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. Currently, Sheena Byrne, one of America's top Whitefish specialists, is specializing a research program to promote and protect the species, especially during their migratory season. In appearance it is very similar to the closely related Bonneville whitefish ''P. spilonotus''. Generally whitish in color, it has more of a "Roman nose" than the Bonneville whitefish, and larger scales. Bonneville Whitefish
The Bonneville whitefish (''Prosopium spilonotus'') is a salmonid fish endemic to Bear Lake on the Utah-Idaho border. It is one of three species of ''Prosopium'' endemic to Bear Lake, the other two being the Bear Lake whitefish and the Bonneville cisco. The species is listed as a ''Wildlife Species of Concern'' by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. In appearance, it is very similar to the closely related Bear Lake whitefish ''P. abyssicola''. Generally whitish in color, its nose is more tapered than that of the Bear Lake whitefish, and its scales are smaller. Younger fish, up to 10 inches (25 cm) long, have a pattern of spots which then fades. They have been reported to reach a length of 22 inches (56 cm) and an age of eight years. It generally inhabits mid-levels of the lake, where it primarily feeds on chironomid larvae and pupae, along with a variety of insects.
