Project Wasteless
Project Wasteless is the national level food waste prevention programme of Hungary, part of the European and global food loss and food waste prevention initiative, a member organisation of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste. Project Wasteless was launched by the National Food Chain Safety Office in 2016 with the co-funding of the EU LIFE Framework. In 2023 Project Wasteless was identified as a European good practice by the European Commission, based on the findings of the European Consumer Food Waste Forum, and also received the EU LIFE Award, as one of the top 3 environmental protection projects in Europe. Food Loss And Waste
The causes of food going uneaten are numerous and occur throughout the food system, during production, processing, distribution, retail and food service sales, and consumption. Overall, about one-third of the world's food is thrown away. A similar amount is lost on top of that by feeding human-edible food to farm animals (the net effect wastes an estimated 1144 kcal/person/day). A 2021 meta-analysis, that did not include food lost during production, by the United Nations Environment Programme found that food waste was a challenge in all countries at all levels of economic development. The analysis estimated that global food waste was 931 million tonnes of food waste (about 121 kg per capita) across three sectors: 61 percent from households, 26 percent from food service and 13 percent from retail. National Food Chain Safety Office
National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih/NFCSO) is the integrated food safety authority of Hungary, established on 15 March 2012. History The roots of NFCSO are dated back to the first officially organized animal health service founded by the Animal Health Act VII/1888. The focus of the service has shifted from animal health to food security, then food safety according to the historical needs of Hungary. Sustainability issues and investigation of cases related to economic frauds in the food chain has appeared in the 21st century. LIFE Programme
The LIFE programme (French: L’Instrument Financier pour l’Environnement) is the European Union's funding instrument for the environment and climate action. The general objective of LIFE is to contribute to the implementation, updating and development of EU environmental and climate policy and legislation by co-financing projects with European added value. LIFE began in 1992 and to date there have been five phases of the programme (LIFE I: 1992–1995, LIFE II: 1996–1999, LIFE III: 2000–2006, LIFE+: 2007–2013 and LIFE 2014–2020). During this period, LIFE has co-financed some 4600 projects across the EU, with a total contribution of approximately 6.5 billion Euros to the protection of the environment and of climate. Love Food, Hate Waste
Love Food Hate Waste is a campaign, launched by the Waste & Resources Action Programme in 2007, with the aim of reducing the amount of food waste in the United Kingdom. The campaign has been promoted and circulated by many green sites. The campaign claims to have already helped almost two million households reduce their food waste, amounting to savings of almost £300 million and stopping 137,000 tonnes of waste going being wasted. The campaign has now spread to Australia, New Zealand and Canada. End of use-by date In relation to the Love Food Hate Waste campaign, UK minister Hilary Benn announced plans to end the use of use-by dates as he sees them as a major cause of food waste. WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) is a British registered charity. It works with businesses, individuals and communities to achieve a circular economy, by helping them reduce waste, develop sustainable products and use resources in an efficient way. History WRAP was established in 2000 as a company limited by guarantee and receives funding from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Northern Ireland Executive, Zero Waste Scotland, the Welsh Government and the European Union. Karmenu Vella
Karmenu Vella (born 19 June 1950) is a Maltese politician and former member of the European Commission, in charge of Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries between 2014 and 2019. He has been one of the longest serving Maltese Parliamentarian with the Maltese Labour Party. He was appointed Companion of the National Order of Merit of Malta in 2019. Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis (born 9 August 1951) is a member of the European Parliament from 2024 July, a former WHO Special Envoy for the European region, a former European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, a heart surgeon, a co-signatory to the 1990 Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania.
