Project84
Project84 was an art installation comprising life-size statues of 84 men on top of the ITV (TV network), ITV buildings at South Bank, Southbank in London, England. It aimed to highlight the fact that, in the United Kingdom, an average 84 men die by suicide each week. Each of the statues represents a specific, named individual who died by suicide, and whose biographies are available on the project's website. The installation was created by artist Mark Jenkins (artist), Mark Jenkins and his collaborator Sandra Fernandez (artist), Sandra Fernandez, at the instigation of the charity 'CALM' (Campaign Against Living Miserably) with sponsorship from Harry's. It was launched on the ITV programme ''This Morning (TV programme), This Morning'' on 26 March 2018, and remained there for five days. Campaign Against Living Miserably
Campaign Against Living Miserably, or CALM, is a registered charity based in England. CALM runs a free, confidential and anonymous helpline as well as a web chat service, offering help, advice and information to anyone who is struggling or in crisis. History Pilot and relaunch CALM was initially a Department of Health pilot project launched in late 1997 in Manchester with the help of Tony Wilson, and then rolled out to Merseyside in 2000. It was a helpline targeted specifically at young men who were unlikely to contact mainstream services and who were at greater risk of suicide. Jane Powell was commissioned to launch the project and ran it until 2000. When funding for the pilot project ceased in 2004/5, Powell relaunched the pilot as a registered charity in 2006, working with some of the pilot's original commissioners and with Wilson as a founding trustee. Mark Jenkins (artist)
Mark Jenkins (born October 7, 1970) is an American artist who makes sculptural street installations. Jenkins' practice of street art is to use the "street as a stage" where his sculptures interact with the surrounding environment including passersby who unknowingly become actors. His installations often draw the attention of the police. His work has been described as whimsical, macabre, shocking and situationist. Jenkins cites Juan Muñoz as his initial inspiration. In addition to creating art, he also teaches his sculpture techniques and installation practices through workshops. He currently lives in Washington, DC. ''Event Horizon'' is the name of a large-scale public sculpture installation by the British artist Antony Gormley. First displayed in London in 2007, they were later displayed in New York, downtown São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Suicide In The United Kingdom
Suicide is a significant national issue in the United Kingdom. In 2023, there were 7,055 deaths in the UK officially registered as suicide, equating to an average of 19 suicides a day. 6,069 of these registered suicides were in England and Wales, marking the highest suicide rate in England and Wales since 1999. In Scotland there were 792 probable suicides in 2023, an increase of 30 suicides on the year prior in Scotland. In Northern Ireland there were 221 suicide deaths registered in 2023. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under the age of 50 in the UK. The South Bank is an entertainment and commercial area on the south bank of the River Thames, in the London Borough of Lambeth, central London, England. The South Bank is not formally defined, but is generally understood to be situated between County Hall in the west to the Oxo Tower on the borough boundary with Southwark, to the east. Suicide is the act of intentionally causing one's own death. Risk factors for suicide include mental disorders, physical disorders, and substance abuse. Some suicides are impulsive acts driven by stress (such as from financial or academic difficulties), relationship problems (such as breakups or divorces), or harassment and bullying.
