Woolworths New Zealand Limited (formerly Progressive Enterprises) is the second largest grocery company in New Zealand (behind Foodstuffs (company), Foodstuffs), with revenue of NZ$6.2 billion for the year to June 2018. Alongside Foodstuffs, Woolworths NZ forms part of the New Zealand supermarket duopoly. Progressive Enterprises Limited was once owned by the Western Australian Supermarket Group FAL – Foodland Associated Limited which operated Action Supermarkets, Supa Valu Supermarkets and Dewsons Supermarkets. A subsidiary, subsidiary company, or daughter company is a company (law), company completely or partially owned or controlled by another company, called the parent company or holding company, which has legal and financial control over the subsidiary company. Roger Award
The Roger Award For The Worst Transnational Corporation Operating in New Zealand was an annual media campaign run since 1997 by two activist organisations, Campaign Against Foreign Control of Aotearoa and GATT Watchdog. The winners were chosen by a group of academics, activists, businesspeople and trade unionists. In April 2018 it was announced the 2016 Roger Award would be the final award, due to a declining number of nominations. Background The awards bear the name of former New Zealand Finance Minister Sir Roger Douglas, who introduced far reaching market-oriented reforms in the 1980s (also taken into account during the naming decision were New Zealand Business Roundtable director Roger Kerr, the verb "to roger", and the term "Jolly Roger"). Countdown was an Australian-owned New Zealand full-service supermarket Business chain, chain and subsidiary of Woolworths New Zealand, itself a subsidiary of Australia's Woolworths Group (Australia), Woolworths Group. It was one of two supermarket chains in New Zealand, the other being Foodstuffs (company), Foodstuffs. Until the brand's rebranding, there were 194 Countdown stores, with 61 in Auckland. In July 2023, the company announced that all Countdown stores would be rebranded back to Woolworths, the name of the parent company and name of the supermarket used in Australia. Georgie Pie
Georgie Pie was a fast food chain owned by retailer Progressive Enterprises specialising in meat pies that hoped to be New Zealand’s own homegrown alternative to the global fast-food industry giants such as McDonald's, Pizza Hut and Burger King. The first Georgie Pie restaurant opened in 1977, and at its peak there were 32 restaurants across New Zealand. After running into financial difficulties, it was bought out by McDonald's in 1996, mainly for its restaurant locations. The last Georgie Pie store was closed in 1998. Price Chopper was part of the Woolworths New Zealand Supermarket Group, alongside Woolworths and Big Fresh. History The Price Chopper format was established in 1987, as a discount supermarket chain with a limited fresh foods. Woolworths rebranded its smaller stores under the new brand, allowing them to remain open and ensure the sites were not taken over by competitors. Price Chopper stores were centrally located in small towns and metro areas with no discount supermarkets, and the stores had the same modern technology of larger supermarket chains. Big Fresh was a New Zealand supermarket chain. The first Big Fresh store opened in 1988 in Mount Wellington, Auckland. In 2003, the Big Fresh brand was shut-down by its owner Progressive Enterprises, with branches converted to Countdown or Woolworths, or shut down altogether. The distinguishing feature of the Big Fresh was its emulation of a farmers market in a supermarket environment, with a focus on an extensive range of fresh foods; this was unique in New Zealand at the time of its opening. 3 Guys (also operating as Gubays) was a New Zealand, Irish and US supermarket chain that operated between 1973 and 2003. History Albert Gubay era Albert Gubay established the supermarket chain while living in New Zealand from January 1973 to April 1974. Shares in rival supermarket chain Foodtown fell dramatically when his move to New Zealand was confirmed. Gubay asked the Minister of Trade (New Zealand), Minister of Trade and Industry Joe Walding to force Unilever and other suppliers to do business with him. However, an investigation found the suppliers were not breaking the law, and Unilever publicly offered to supply Gubay on similar terms to other buyers.
