Prizren
Prizren ( sq-definite, Prizreni, ; sr-cyr, Призрен) is the second List of cities and towns in Kosovo, most populous city and Municipalities of Kosovo, municipality of Kosovo and seat of the eponymous municipality and District of Prizren, district. It is located on the banks of the Prizren Bistrica, Prizren River between the foothills of the Sharr Mountains in southern Kosovo. Prizren experiences a continental climate with some mediterranean climate, mediterranean influences. Prizren is constitutionally designated as the historical capital of the country. Archaeological excavations in Prizren Fortress indicate that its fortress area has seen habitation and use since the Bronze Age. Prizren Fortress
Prizren Fortress (; , ''Prizrenski grad'') is a hilltop fortification in Prizren in Kosovo. It overlooks the Prizren River which flows through Prizren, which developed around the fortress. The site of the fortress of Prizren has seen habitation and use since the Bronze Age (ca. 2000 BC). In late antiquity it was part of the defensive fortification system in western Dardania and was reconstructed in the era of eastern Roman Emperor Justinian. Byzantine rule in the region ended definitively in 1219–20 as the Serbian Nemanjić dynasty controlled the fort until 1371. Since 1371, a series of regional feudal rulers came to control Prizren and its fort: the Balšić, the Dukagjini, the Hrebeljanović and finally the Branković, often with Ottoman support. The Ottoman Empire assumed direct control after 1450 and over time turned the fort into a central stronghold in the Eyalet of Rumelia. Our Lady Of Ljeviš
Our Lady of Ljeviš ( sr-Cyrl-Latn, Богородица Љевишка, Bogorodica Ljeviška; ) is a 14th-century Serbian Orthodox Church, Serbian Orthodox church in the town of Prizren, in southern Kosovo. Since 2006, the church is part of the World Heritage Site, UNESCO World Heritage Site named Medieval Monuments in Kosovo. The church was built in the beginning of the 14th century on the orders of Stefan Milutin, List of Serbian monarchs, King of Serbia, on the site of a former Byzantine church. The District of Prizren (, ) is one of the seven districts of Kosovo. Its seat is in the city of Prizren. According to the 2011 Census, it has a population of 331,670 and an area of 2,024 square km (around 20% of the total area of Kosovo). Prizren Bistrica
The Lumbardhi i Prizrenit, or Prizren Bistrica (; ) is a river in Kosovo. It flows through Prizren, the second most populous city in Kosovo (Serbia), and empties into the White Drin river. It is long, and has a drainage basin of . It stems from the Sharr Mountains. The most important tributaries of Prizren's Lumbardh are Shartica, Petroshnica, Drajçica, Lubinja, Jabllanica and Lumi i Manastirit. The fast-flowing river water passes under Prizren's many bridges as it travels through the city. Name The river's name, Lumbardh, literally translates to White River in Albanian. Shaqir Totaj
Shaqir Totaj is a Kosovo-Albanian conservative politician currently serving as Mayor of Prizren. Totaj was elected mayor in 2021 and belongs to the center-right PDK party. Early life and education Shaqir Totaj was born on 24 December 1960 in Prizren, in the then Kosovo which was part of Socialist Yugoslavia. He finished high school in Prizren and went on to graduate from the University of Prishtina Economics Faculty. Sharr Mountains
Dragash or Sharr ( sq-definite, Dragashi or ''Sharri;'' sr-cyr, Драгаш) is a town and municipality located in the Prizren District of Kosovo. According to the 2011 census, the municipality has 34,827 inhabitants. The Albanian name ''Sharri'' is a reference to the Šar Mountains (in Albanian ''Sharr''). The Serbian name ''Dragaš'' comes from medieval Serbian lord Constantine Dragaš. History The oldest mosque in Kosovo and in the Balkans was built in 1289 and it is called Al-Aga Mosque. Cathedral Of Our Lady Of Perpetual Succour (Prizren)
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour also known as Precinct of the Lady Helper Church and Con-cathedral of the Lady Helper is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Prizren, Kosovo. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Prizren-Pristina. History The Cathedral was commissioned by Italian Dario Bucciarelli, Archbishop of Skopje, in 1870 who had worked as a missionary in Albania for 9 years and had been secretary to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Shkodër–Pult, Archbishop of Shkodër. During that time, it was financed by citizens of Dubrovnik. However, the site was likely a graveyard church dating back to the 5th century, uncovered during excavations carried out between 2019 and 2021. Sinan Pasha Mosque (Prizren)
The Sinan Pasha Mosque (; ; ) is an Ottoman Empire, Ottoman-era mosque in the city of Prizren, Kosovo built by Sofi Sinan Pasha, Sofi Sinan in 1615. The mosque overlooks the main street of Prizren and is a dominant feature in the town's skyline. History Sofi Sinan Pasha started construction of the mosque in either 1600 or 1608. Sofi Sinan Pasha, an Albanian and former beylerbey and kaymakam in Bosnia should not be confused with grand vizier Sinan Pasha, who built the Sinan Pasha Mosque (Kaçanik), Sinan Pasha Mosque in the nearby city of Kaçanik.
