Pride Of Baltimore
''Pride of Baltimore'' was a reproduction of a typical early 19th-century "Baltimore clipper" topsail schooner, commissioned to represent Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland. This was a style of vessel made famous by its success as a privateer during the War of 1812 against British merchant shipping. After the end of the war in 1815, Baltimore clippers did not have sufficient cargo capacity for normal merchant trade, so some were used in the History of opium in China, illegal American opium trade into China and vessels of the same type were used in the Atlantic slave trade from Africa. ''Pride of Baltimore'' was commissioned on 1 May 1977 by the 44th Mayor of Baltimore, William Donald Schaefer, in an elaborate public ceremony in the historic Inner Harbor watched by thousands of Baltimoreans and Marylanders. Thomas Kemp (shipbuilder)
Thomas Kemp (28 February 1779 – 2 March 1824) was a Baltimore shipbuilder, known for building some of the fastest and best known privateers of the War of 1812, such as , , ''Patapsco'', ''Chasseur'', and ''Lynx''. Early Career as a Shipbuilder Thomas Kemp moved to Baltimore in 1803 from near Saint Michaels, Maryland on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. He is thought to have learned at least some of his shipbuilding skills at the Dawson's wharf shipyard in St. Michaels. In 1804, he built a schooner with his brother Joseph. In the next few years his shipyard was mostly involved in making repairs to Baltimore vessels. Length At The Waterline
A vessel's length at the waterline (abbreviated to L.W.L) is the length of a ship or boat at the level where it sits in the water (the ''waterline''). The LWL will be shorter than the length of the boat overall (''length overall'' or LOA) as most boats have bows and stern protrusions that make the LOA greater than the LWL. As a ship becomes more loaded, it will sit lower in the water and its ambient waterline length may change; but the registered L.W.L is measured from a default load condition. The ''Weekly Register'' (also called the ''Niles Weekly Register'' and ''Niles' Register'') was a national magazine published in Baltimore, Maryland by Hezekiah Niles from 1811 to 1848. The most widely circulated magazine of its time, the ''Register'' was the nation's first weekly newsmagazine and "exerted a powerful influence on the early national discourse." Niles was Baltimore's most prominent citizen at the time. As of the time of publication of volume 36, the magazine was headquartered at "Water Street, east of South Street." HMS St Lawrence (1813)
HMS ''St Lawrence'' was a 14-gun schooner of the Royal Navy. She had been built in 1808 in St. Michaels, Talbot County, Maryland for Thomas Tennant and sold to Philadelphians in 1810. During the War of 1812 she was the US privateer ''Atlas''. The UK captured her in 1813 and renamed her ''St Lawrence''. The US privateer recaptured her in 1815, and then re-recaptured her. The Treaty of Ghent () was the peace treaty that ended the War of 1812 between the United States and the United Kingdom. It took effect in February 1815. Both sides signed it on December 24, 1814, in the city of Ghent, United Netherlands (now in Belgium). The treaty restored relations between the two parties to ''status quo ante bellum'' by restoring the pre-war borders of June 1812. Both sides were eager to end the war.
