The Preuss School, Preuss School UCSD, or Preuss Model School ( ), is a coeducational college-preparatory charter day school established on a $14 million campus, situated on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. The school was named in recognition of a gift from the Preuss Family Foundation and is chartered under the San Diego Unified School District. Founded in 1999 in the wake of passage of California Proposition 209, Preuss uses an intensive college preparatory curriculum to educate low-income students between sixth and twelfth grade, hoping to improve their historical under-representation on the campuses of the University of California. George Karl Ludwig Preuss (1803–1854), anglicized as Charles Preuss, was a surveyor and cartographer who accompanied John C. Fremont on three of his five exploratory expeditions of the American west, including the expedition where he and Fremont were the first to record seeing Lake Tahoe from a mountaintop vantage point as they traversed what is now Carson Pass in February 1844. He is the author of numerous stand-alone novels as well as novels in ''Arthur C. Clarke's Venus Prime'' series, based upon incidents, characters, and places from Clarke's short stories. Leutnant Werner Preuss (21 September 1894 – 6 March 1919), Royal House Order of Hohenzollern, Iron Cross, was a World War I fighter ace credited with 22 victories. Early life and military service Werner Preuss was the son of a tax inspector. He graduated from high school in Rendsburg, Holstein on 6 August 1914. Eight days later, he volunteered for service with Infantry Regiment No. 85. On 15 May 1915, he attended an officer's training course. He returned to the front from this course as a sergeant. On 16 January 1916, he was commissioned an officer. On 25 May 1916, he was severely wounded. It would take him a year to recover from paralysis. Konrad Theodor Preuss (June 2, 1869 – June 8, 1938) was a German ethnologist. He was chairman of the Lithuanian Literary Society (1890–98). Preuss was born in Preußisch-Eylau. After studying at the Albertina in Königsberg in Prussia and at Frederick William's University of Berlin he joined the Ethnological Museum of Berlin in 1895, advancing to director of the Central and North American department in 1920, before retiring in 1934. Franziska Preuß (also spelled Preuss, born 11 March 1994) is a German biathlete and the World Cup winner of the 2024–25 season. She made her World Cup debut during the 2013–14 season and represented Germany at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics.
