Pressly Matthews
Pressly Hemingway Matthews (21 February 1903 – 25 September 1967) was a New Zealand politician and, from 1960 to 1962, the second leader of New Zealand's Social Credit Party. Biography Matthews was the only son of David Pressly Matthews (1854–1937). His mother was a daughter of Janet Simpson, a resident of Nelson. His father was from Dunedin and worked for the ''Otago Daily Times'' before he became a contractor during the gold boom in Paeroa and Waihi. The family moved to Wellington in 1905 where his father had a chain of butcher shops. His father farmed in Tākaka from 1918 to 1936. Matthews became leader of the Social Credit Party at the party's annual conference in Wellington in May 1960 for the 1960 general election. The campaign opening was a disaster as he altered his address just before the opening meeting, and three candidates missed the nomination deadline. He was replaced by Vernon Cracknell in 1962. Social Credit Party (New Zealand)
The New Zealand Social Credit Party (sometimes called "Socred") was a political party that was New Zealand's third party from the 1950s to the 1980s. It won representation in the New Zealand House of Representatives, holding one seat at times between 1966 and 1981, and two seats from 1981 to 1987. While Social Credit once had significant support, particularly as a protest vote, it was disadvantaged by first-past-the-post voting as it had no geographically concentrated vote. Its most identifiable leaders were Vernon Cracknell (1963-70), who served just one term in parliament, and the household name Bruce Beetham, who rebuilt the party into a significant political force. At its zenith under Beetham in 1981, Social Credit achieved 20.7% of the vote. The party held no seats in its own right after 1987 and subsequently declined. Gloucester Street
Gloucester Street is a major urban street in central Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand. It runs for approximately from a junction with Rolleston Avenue at its western end, directly opposite Christ's College, to the suburbs of Linwood and Avonside in the east. For the majority of its length it runs due west-east, with the section from the central city's eastern edge to Linwood veering to the northeast. The street lies parallel with and one block to the north of Worcester Street. The street's course is interrupted for one block by the Convention Centre Precinct. As it crosses Linwood Avenue, the street turns northeast and narrows, becoming a suburban arterial road. It then turns north, ending at the Avon River / Ōtākaro. A bridge, Dallington Bridge, crosses the river at this point, and the street continues as Gayhurst Road through a former residential area which was razed as a result of the 2011 Christchurch earthquake.
