Presence (band)
Presence were a British rock band formed in 1990, best known for its associations with the Cure. They released the album '' Inside'' in 1992 and split the following year. History Presence was formed by keyboardist Lol Tolhurst, a founding member of the Cure who had left that band in 1989; and singer Gary Biddles, a former member of Fools Dance who had also served as a member of the Cure's road crew in the early 1980s. Two other former members of the Cure, bassist Michael Dempsey and guitarist Porl Thompson, contributed to Presence's early demo recordings, with Dempsey receiving some songwriting credits. The band's lineup was eventually completed with bassist Roberto Soave, guitarist Rob Steen, keyboardist Chris Youdell (formerly of Then Jericho), and drummer Alan Burgess. This lineup first released the single "In Wonder", followed by the album '' Inside'' in 1992, which despite some favorable reviews was not successful. Gothic Rock
Gothic rock (also called goth rock or simply goth) is a style of rock music that emerged from post-punk in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. The first post-punk bands which shifted toward dark music with gothic overtones include Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus (band), Bauhaus, and the Cure. The genre itself was defined as a separate movement from post-punk. Gothic rock stood out due to its darker sound, with the use of primarily minor or bass chords, reverb, dark arrangements, or dramatic and melancholic melodies, having inspirations in gothic literature allied with themes such as sadness, nihilism, dark romanticism, tragedy, melancholy and morbidity. These themes are often approached poetically. The sensibilities of the genre led the lyrics to represent the evil of the century and the romantic idealization of death and the supernatural imagination. Fools Dance
Fools Dance were an English rock band active from 1983 to 1987, primarily known for their connections to The Cure. History In 1982, Simon Gallup was bassist for The Cure, and Gary Biddles was a member of the band's road crew who was occasionally invited to sing onstage. During the tour for the album ''Pornography'', band relations had become contentious, and during a performance in Belgium, Biddles criticized other Cure members Robert Smith and Lol Tolhurst from the stage. Gallup then left the Cure acrimoniously and took Biddles with him.Price, p. 29. Gallup formed a new band in 1983, originally known as The Cry, with singer Ian Fuller, guitarist Stuart Curran (formerly of The Magazine Spies), drummer Paul Thompson (formerly of Roxy Music), and keyboardist Matthieu Hartley (another former member of The Cure). Levinhurst
Levinhurst is an English electronic band formed by keyboardist/drummer Lol Tolhurst, a founding member of the Cure, and his wife Cindy Levinson on vocals. The band's name is a portmanteau of their surnames. To date, Levinhurst has released three studio albums. History The band was formed in 2002, with Tolhurst and Levinson assisted by guitarist/keyboardist Dayton Borders. Their debut album, '' Perfect Life'', was released in 2004. This was followed in 2006 by an EP called ''The Grey'', which featured a cover of the early Cure song " All Cats Are Grey". Their second full-length album, '' House by the Sea'', was released in 2007. By this point, guitarist/bassist Eric Bradley had joined the band. Boris Williams
Boris Peter Bransby Williams (born 24 April 1951) is an English musician, best known as the drummer for The Cure from 1984 until 1994, and for forming the band Babacar (band), Babacar in the late 1990s. Biography Williams was born in 1951 (some sources mistakenly say 1957) in Versailles, Yvelines, Versailles, France to English parents and his family moved to Farnham, Farnham, England during his childhood. He first played drums in local bands with future Cure bandmate Roger O'Donnell and originally focused on jazz fusion. He then turned to alternative rock and served as a session and touring musician for Thompson Twins and Kim Wilde. In 1984, The Cure needed a new drummer in the middle of an American tour, when previous drummer Andy Anderson (drummer), Andy Anderson was suddenly fired. Babacar was a short-lived rock supergroup formed in England, featuring former members of Shelleyan Orphan, the Cure, and Presence. The group released a self-titled album in 1998. History Before forming Babacar, vocalist Caroline Crawley was a member of Shelleyan Orphan until their breakup in 1993. Several other members had associations with The Cure. Simon Gallup
Simon Johnathon Gallup (born 1 June 1960) is an English musician who is best known as bassist for The Cure, which he first joined in 1979 and for which he has played through most of the band's history. Gallup is the second-longest-serving member of the band, after the vocalist and leader Robert Smith. Career Early years Gallup was born in Duxhurst, Surrey, and his family soon moved to Horley. John Porter (musician, Born 1947)
John Porter (born 11 September 1947 in Leeds) is an English musician and record producer. Biography He attended St Michael's School, Allerton Grange School, King's College, London, and Newcastle University. While at Newcastle, Porter met singer Bryan Ferry, and was part of his fledgling band The Gas Board. Ferry's later band Roxy Music had achieved success in the early 1970s, but having had some troubles with bass players, Ferry invited Porter on board to record the 1973 album ''For Your Pleasure'' before the band found a permanent bassist. Porter went on to serve as a record producer for many later albums for Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry. He has since produced for The Smiths, Billy Bragg, The Blades, Microdisney, School of Fish, B. B. King, Los Lonely Boys, Buddy Guy, Ryan Adams, Missy Higgins and numerous other bands. Then Jerico are an English rock band. They scored five top 50 hits in the UK during the 1980s. Career The band's early line-up included singer Mark Shaw, bassist Jasper Stainthorpe, drummer Steve Wren, and guitarist Scott Taylor. The band played at The Limelight Club in New York in 1983 and signed to London Records in 1984. The single "The Big Sweep" was recorded for London but they objected to the lyrical subject matter (an anti-Robert Maxwell/Rupert Murdoch statement). It was initially released by the track's producer Martin Rushent on his own Immaculate label in 1985 and later as a limited edition by London Records along with the new song "Fault". New Wave Music
New wave is a music genre that encompasses pop music, pop-oriented styles from the 1970s through the 1980s. It is considered a lighter and more melodic "broadening of Punk subculture, punk culture". It was originally used as a catch-all for the various styles of music that emerged after punk rock. Later, critical consensus favored "new wave" as an umbrella term involving many contemporary popular music styles, including synth-pop, alternative dance and post-punk.
