Prem is a brand of canned lunch meat similar to Spam first introduced in 1939 by the original Swift & Company in the United States. The brand is currently owned by Zwanenberg Food Group USA. In Canada, Prem continues to be sold under the Swift umbrella brand and both trademarks are currently owned by Maple Leaf Foods. Prem was shipped to England during World War II. Spam (stylized in all-caps) is a brand of lunch meat ( processed canned pork and ham) made by Hormel Foods Corporation, an American multinational food processing company. It was introduced in the United States in 1937 and gained popularity worldwide after its use during World War II. , Spam was sold in 41 countries, and trademarked in more than 100, on six continents. Spam's main ingredients are pork shoulder and ham, with salt, water, modified potato starch (as a binder), sugar, and sodium nitrite (as a preservative). Natural gelatin is formed during cooking in its cans on the production line. It is available in different flavors, some using different meats, as well as in "lite" and lower-sodium versions. Gustavus Franklin Swift
Gustavus Franklin Swift, Sr. (June 24, 1839 – March 29, 1903) was an American business executive. He founded a meat-packing empire in the Midwest during the late 19th century, over which he presided until his death. He is credited with the development of the first practical ice-cooled railroad car, which allowed his company to ship dressed meats to all parts of the country and abroad, ushering in the "era of cheap beef." Swift pioneered the use of animal by-products for the manufacture of soap, glue, fertilizer, various types of sundries, and even medical products. Swift donated large sums of money to such institutions as the University of Chicago, the Methodist Episcopal Church, and YMCA. He established Northwestern University's "School of Oratory" in memory of his daughter, Annie May Swift, who died while a student there. Potted Meat Food Product
Potted meat is a form of traditional food preservation in which hot cooked meat is placed in a pot, tightly packed to exclude air, and then covered with hot fat. As the fat cools, it hardens and forms an airtight seal, preventing some spoilage by airborne bacteria. Before the days of refrigeration, potted meat was developed as a way to preserve meat when a freshly slaughtered animal could not be fully eaten immediately. Like Spam, it is often fried or baked before consumption. Treet is currently manufactured by Pinnacle Foods. Nutritional data A 56 gram (approximately 2 ounce) serving of Treet provides six grams of protein, four grams of carbohydrates, 11 grams of fat (17% US Daily Value) including 3.5 grams of saturated fat (18% US Daily Value), and 140 calories.
