Poydras
Poydras is a census-designated place (CDP) in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 3,886 at the 2000 census and 2,536 in 2020. It is part of the New Orleans– Metairie–Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area. Poydras is on the East Bank of the Mississippi River, just upriver from the Plaquemines Parish line. History Poydras was first settled in the 18th century by Isleños when Louisiana was a Spanish colony. Presumably, the town is named for Julien Poydras. Albert Estopinal, Jr., a St. Bernard Parish district attorney, judge, and sheriff, was born in Poydras in 1869 to later U.S. Representative, Albert Estopinal, Sr. The locally constructed levee failed during the 1922 flood and the community of Poydras was destroyed. Some historians claim that the levee break was intentional to save the City of New Orleans. Julien De Lallande Poydras
Julien de Lallande (Lalande) Poydras (April 3, 1740 – June 23, 1824) was a French American merchant, planter, financier, poet, educator and political leader who served as Delegate from the Territory of Orleans to the U.S. House of Representatives from 1809 to 1811. He was a catalyst in the promotion of Louisiana statehood and helped draft the state's first constitution. He served as the first President of the Louisiana State Senate from 1812 to 1813. Biography He was born in Rezé (near Nantes), then in the French province of Brittany. He served in the French Navy and was captured by the British in 1760 and taken to England. Albert Estopinal
Albert Estopinal (January 30, 1845 – April 28, 1919) was an American Civil War veteran who served seven terms as a U.S. Representative from Louisiana from 1908 to 1919. Biography Albert Estopinal was born in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, on January 30, 1845. He attended both public and private schools before leaving school in January 1862 to enlist in the Confederate Army. Civil War During the Civil War, Estopinal served in Company G, Twenty-eighth Regiment of the Louisiana Infantry. He eventually rose to the rank of sergeant of Company G, Twenty-second Louisiana Heavy Artillery. There, he served throughout the Civil War.
