Poway () is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. Poway's rural roots influenced its motto "The City in the Country". The city had a population of 48,841 as of the 2020 United States census. Poway is part of San Diego's East County. History The Kumeyaay people lived in the area for centuries before the Spanish colonization of the region. Artifacts such as arrowheads, spear points, metates, grinding stones, and pottery found along the bed of Poway Creek all indicate an early Kumeyaay presence. Various pictographs adorn many of Poway's boulders, and modern dating techniques suggest these paintings date to the 16th century and earlier. European settlement In the late 18th century, Mission San Diego de Alcalá kept cattle in the valley. Documents of Mission San Diego de Alcala record the name of the valley as "Paguay" as early as 1828. Steve Vaus
Steve Vaus (also known as Buck Howdy; born April 7, 1962) is an American recording artist and politician serving as the mayor of Poway, California, since 2014. In 2020, he ran for a seat on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, losing narrowly to Joel Anderson. Early life and education Vaus was born in Los Angeles. As a child, he lived on a cattle ranch in Grants Pass, Oregon, and in Westchester County, New York. After graduating from Eisenhower College in Seneca Falls, New York, Vaus relocated to San Diego to be closer to his parents. Career Music Vaus primarily records country music and country music for children. He is also known for his Christmas recordings including ''The Stars Come Out for Christmas'' series. Vaus established "Carols by Candlelight" in 1990, a charity fundraiser for various charities serving children including Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego which has become a 34-year San Diego tradition. East County is a region of San Diego County, California, east of San Diego. Rancho Paguai
Rancho Paguai, named by the Mexicans after a local Kumeyaay village, was located in what is now the valley of Poway Creek and Poway Valley. It was a Mexican land grant rancho, granted by Governor Juan Alvarado on September 7, 1839, and confirmed May 22, 1840, to Rosario E. Aguilar a former Corporal of the San Diego Mission guard and the Majordomo of the Mission in 1838. However, Aguilar did not occupy or improve it and so forfeited the grant. He, having received an appointment as Juez de paz in 1841, afterward moved to San Juan Capistrano and took up land there. Details on the extent of the rancho are unknown. Kumeyaay
The Kumeyaay, also known as 'Iipai-Tiipai or by the historical Spanish name Diegueño, is a tribe of Indigenous peoples of the Americas who live at the northern border of Baja California in Mexico and the southern border of California in the United States. They are an Indigenous people of California. The Kumeyaay language belongs to the Yuman–Cochimí language family. The Kumeyaay consist of three related groups, the 'Iipai, Tiipai, and Kamia. The San Diego River loosely divided the 'Iipay and the Tiipai historical homelands, while the Kamia lived in the eastern desert areas. The 'Iipai lived to the north, from Escondido to Lake Henshaw, while the Tiipai lived to the south, in lands including the Laguna Mountains, Ensenada, and Tecate. Rosario Aguilar
Rosario E. Aguilar (ca. 1792 – 1847) was an early settler of San Diego, California. Life Aguilar was born around 1792 in Spain. He was corporal of the mission guard at San Diego, and had a house on site of the present town, in 1821. In 1827, Aguilar built the Jolly Boy saloon on the town square. The bar and billiard saloon was operated by various people until the 1880s when it was demolished. A reconstructed Jolly Boy Saloon and Restaurant is located near the site of the original saloon. He was majordomo of San Diego Mission in 1838. In 1839, Governor Juan Alvarado granted Rancho Paguai in present Poway, California, but he did not occupy or improve it, so forfeited the grant. In 1841, Aguilar was Suplente (Substitute Justice of the Peace or Mayor) of San Diego. He moved to San Juan Capistrano soon after and obtained land there. He died there in 1847. The Cedar Fire was a massive, highly-destructive wildfire, which burned of land in San Diego County, California, during October and November 2003. The fire's rapid growth was driven by the Santa Ana winds, causing the fire to spread at a rate of per hour. By the time the fire was fully contained on November 4, it had destroyed 2,820 buildings (including 2,232 homes) and killed 15 people, including one firefighter. Hotspots continued to burn within the Cedar Fire's perimeter until December 5, 2003, when the fire was fully brought under control. The fire remains one of the largest wildfires in California history and, as of January 2022, the ninth-largest wildfire in the state's modern history. Alta California (, ), also known as Nueva California () among other names, was a province of New Spain formally established in 1804. Along with the Baja California peninsula, it had previously comprised the province of , but was made a separate province in 1804 (named ). A sanitary sewer is an underground pipe or tunnel system for transporting sewage from houses and commercial buildings (but not stormwater) to a sewage treatment plant or disposal.
