Postcards From Scotland
''Postcards from Scotland'' is a 2024 book by Scottish film director Grant McPhee that covers Scotland's 1980's and 1990's independent music scene. It focuses on the stories of The Pastels, Shop Assistants, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, The Soup Dragons, BMX Bandits, The Vaselines, Eugenius, Jesse Garon, and the Desperadoes, Finitribe, The Motorcycle Boy, The Big Gun, and Rote Kapelle. The book was launched with two live events featuring a ‘supergroup’ made up of members of Shop Assistants, BMX Bandits, Fizzbombs, Rote Kapelle and Jesse Garon and the Desperadoes while being backed by The Cords. A second volume has been completed and will be released by Omnibus books. This volume tells an alternative story of Scotland's Underground Music scene during a similar time-frame, featuring Dawson, Badgewearer, Stretcheads, The Yummy Fur, Lung Leg, Mogwai, Bis, Chemikal Underground, The Delgadoes, Belle and Sebastian, Arab Strap and Franz Ferdinand. Grant McPhee
Grant McPhee is a Scottish film director, cinematographer and writer. His films include the music documentaries '' Big Gold Dream'', '' Teenage Superstars'' and the drama, '' Far From the Apple Tree'' starring Sorcha Groundsell. He won the prestigious audience choice award in 2015 for his film Big Gold Dream at the 2015 edition of the Edinburgh International Film Festival. In television, he worked as a second unit director and cinematographer on '' ''Outlander''''. He has written articles for The National, I News, Clash Music, Caught by the River, Louder Than War, Bella Caledonia and the books Hungry Beat (as co-writer) published by White Rabbit Books, Postcards From Scotland published by Omnibus Books and a soon to be released book on Glasgow’s 1990’s underground music scene. ''Louder Than War'' is a music and culture website and magazine focusing on mainly alternative arts news, reviews, and features. The site is an editorially independent publication that was started by the English musician and journalist John Robb in 2010 and is now co-run by a team of other journalists with a worldwide team of freelancers. Rote Kapelle were a post-punk/indie pop band from Edinburgh, Scotland, active during the 1980s. Its band members included musicians who were also members of Jesse Garon and the Desperadoes and The Shop Assistants. The Motorcycle Boy
The Motorcycle Boy were a Scottish indie pop band formed in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1987 by former members of Meat Whiplash and Shop Assistants. History The band consisted of Alex Taylor (vocals, formerly of Shop Assistants), Paul McDermott (drums), Michael Kerr (guitar), and Eddy Connelly (bass) (all formerly of Meat Whiplash), and David "Scottie" Scott (guitar). They were signed by Rough Trade Records, who issued their debut single, "Big Rock Candy Mountain", which reached number 2 in the UK Independent Chart. The band were then signed by Chrysalis Records, with two singles, but failed to achieve great success despite considerable press attention.
