Portuguese Canoeing Federation
The Portuguese Canoe Federation () is the governing body of canoeing in Portugal. It organizes the Portuguese representation at international competitions and the Portuguese National Championships of Canoe sprint, Canoe slalom, Wildwater canoeing, Canoe marathon, Canoe Polo and Canoe freestyle. The Federation was formed on 10 May 1979 in Portugal. It became a member of the International Canoe Federation and of the European Canoe Association in 1980. Canoeing
Canoeing is an activity which involves paddling a canoe with a single-bladed paddle. In some parts of Europe, canoeing refers to both canoeing and kayaking, with a canoe being called an 'open canoe' or Canadian. A few of the recreational forms of canoeing are canoe camping and canoe racing. Other forms include a wide range of canoeing on lakes, rivers, oceans, ponds and streams. Canoe Sprint European Championships
The Canoe Sprint European Championships (or European Canoe Sprint Championships) is an international canoeing and kayaking event organized by the European Canoe Association (ECA). It was first held in 1933 in Prague under the auspices of the International Canoe Federation. In 1997, the European Championships were resumed, and now take place annually. The most titled athlete of the European Championships is Hungarian Katalin Kovács, who has 29 gold medals, 17 silver medals and 2 bronze medals in her record. Among men, the number of wins is led by German Ronald Rauhe, who won the European championships 17 times. Beatriz Gomes (born 31 December 1979) is a Portuguese sprint canoer and marathon canoeist who has competed since the late first decade of the 21st century. She won a bronze medal in the K-4 200 m event at the 2009 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Dartmouth. She was World Champion in the K1 Marathon event in 2009. Gomes also competed in the K-2 500 m event at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, but was eliminated in the semifinals. Joana Sofia Barbosa Vasconcelos (born 22 February 1991) is a Portuguese sprint canoer who has competed since the 2010s. At club level, she represents Benfica. Career Born in Vila Nova de Gaia, Vasconcelos started canoeing in Clube Náutico de Crestuma, where she won the ICF Canoe Kayak Sprint Junior World Championships in K-1 1000m class that took place in Moscow in 2009. The 18-year-old then moved to Benfica in 2010, and currently studies and practises at the Center for High Performance in Montemor-o-Velho. She won a bronze medal in the K-2 200 m event at the 2012 Canoe Sprint European Championships in Zagreb. Teresa do Rosário Afonso Portela (born 30 October 1987) is a Portuguese sprint canoer who has competed since the late 2000s. Career She won a bronze medal in the K-4 200 m event at the 2009 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Dartmouth. At club level, she competes for S.L. Benfica. Portela also competed in the K-1 500 m event at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, but she was eliminated in the semifinals. In 2010, Portela won the gold in the K1 200m World Cup at Szeged, Hungary. In 2011, she won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Belgrade and also won the World Cup II meet, both in the K1 200 discipline. Emanuel Silva
Emanuel Eduardo Pimenta Vieira da Silva, GOIH (born 4 December 1985), is a Portuguese sprint canoer. He was born in Braga. A finalist at the 2004 Olympics and medalist at the 2012 Olympics, he is Portugal's most successful kayak sprinter since the 1980s. Despite training with very limited resources, Silva became outright Portuguese individual champion over three distances (500 m, 1000 m and 10,000 m) at the age of just sixteen. In 2003 he starred at the world junior championships in Komatsu, Ishikawa, Komatsu, Japan, winning the K1 500 m gold medal and silver in the K1 1000 m. He then competed in his first senior world championships, in Gainesville, USA, placing a highly-creditable sixteenth in the K-1 1000 m.
