Portroe GAA
Portroe GAA is a Tipperary GAA club which is located in County Tipperary, Ireland. Both hurling and Gaelic football are played in the "North-Tipperary" divisional competitions. The club is centred on the village of Portroe which is eight miles outside Nenagh. History Portroe is in the centre of a traditional slate quarrying district of Northwest Tipperary. A number of people from the area emigrated to the "slate belt" of Vermont in the 19th century. Portroe GAA club was formed in the 1880s. The club has won several Norther Tipperary divisional titles, and won the Tipperary Intermediate Hurling Championship in 1990. The Tipperary County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) () or Tipperary GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Tipperary and the Tipperary county teams. County Tipperary holds an honoured place in the history of the GAA as the organisation was founded in Hayes' Hotel, Thurles, on 1 November 1884. The county football team was the second from the province of Munster both to win an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC) title, as well as to appear in a final, following Limerick. Hurling
Hurling (, ') is an outdoor Team sport, team game of ancient Gaelic culture, Gaelic Irish origin, played by men and women. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much glossary of Gaelic games terms, terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football (; short name '')'', commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA, or football, is an Irish team sport. A form of football, it is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or palming the ball into the other team's Goal (sport), goal (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goal and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the ball up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). Portroe
Portroe () is a village in County Tipperary, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. The village is located on the R494 road (Ireland), R494 regional road, 2km from the eastern shore of Lough Derg (Shannon), Lough Derg and 11km west of the town of Nenagh. Portroe spans the townlands of Garrykennedy, Glencrue and Shesharoe. Transport Bus Éireann route 323 serves the village. It travels to and from Limerick City, Limerick and Nenagh. The bus stop is situated either side of 'Portroe cross' at the bottom of the village near Gleeson's Spar. Nenagh
Nenagh ( ; , or simply 'the Fair') is the county town of County Tipperary in Republic of Ireland, Ireland. Nenagh used to be a market town, and the site of the East Munster Ormond Fair. Nenagh was the county town of the former county of North Tipperary. It became the second-largest urban centre in the amalgamated county, with a population of 9,895 in 2022. Tipperary Intermediate Hurling Championship
The Tipperary Intermediate Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition organised by the Tipperary County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1979 for the third-tier hurling teams in the county of Tipperary in Ireland. The series of games are played during the summer and autumn months with the county final currently being played at Semple Stadium in October. The championship has always been played on a regional basis, whereby the respective champions from the Mid, North, South and West championships contest the county series of games. However, in recent years, the championship has followed the same system as the senior grade in Tipperary. Currently (2018) there are 21 teams in the county championship divided up into 6 groups (3 groups with 4 teams, 3 groups with 3 teams). Kevin O'Halloran (Gaelic Footballer)
Kevin O'Halloran (born 6 January 1994) is an Irish Gaelic football player who plays at inter-county level for Tipperary, and plays his club football for Portroe. Career O'Halloran made his championship debut for Tipperary in 2015 against Kerry. On 31 July 2016, he scored 0-4 as Tipperary defeated Galway in the 2016 All-Ireland Quarter-finals at Croke Park to reach their first All-Ireland semi-final since 1935. John Sheedy
John Sheedy (born 1959) is an Irish retired hurler who played as a goalkeeper with the Tipperary GAA, Tipperary senior team. Born in Portroe, County Tipperary, Sheedy first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Tipperary minor team, before later joining the under-21 hurling and junior teams. He made his senior debut during the 1983 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, 1983 championship. Sheedy enjoyed a brief career with Tipperary, however, he enjoyed little success. At club level Sheedy enjoyed a lengthy career with Portroe GAA, Portroe. His brother, Liam Sheedy, also played with Tipperary and is an All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, All-Ireland-winning manager. Throughout his inter-county career, Sheedy made 7 championship appearances for Tipperary. Liam Sheedy
Liam Sheedy (born 24 October 1969) is an Irish hurling manager and former player who was the manager of the Tipperary senior hurling team on two occasions. Born in Portroe, County Tipperary, Sheedy enjoyed All-Ireland success as a schoolboy hurler before enjoying championship success at club level with Portroe. After beginning his inter-county career with the Tipperary minor team, he later enjoyed All-Ireland successes with the Tipperary under-21 and junior teams. Sheedy made his senior debut during the 1989-90 league, however, it would be 1997 before he became a regular member of the starting fifteen. During his brief senior career he won a National Hurling League medal in 1999.
