''Portrait of Sir Edwin Landseer'' is a portrait painting of 1852 by the British artist Francis Grant (artist), Francis Grant depicting his fellow painter Sir Edwin Landseer. Landseer was noted for his paintings featuring animals. His portrait by Grant was commissioned by the shipbuilder and art collector William Wells, who was a friend of Landseer and owned a number of his works. Grant was a leading portraitist of the early Victorian era and went on to serve as President of the Royal Academy, after Landseer had turned down the position. He may have changed his original conception of the painting during the preparation. An earlier version shows Landseer standing by an easel holding a palette (painting), palette to emphasise his profession as an artist. Francis Grant (artist)
Sir Francis Grant (18 January 1803 – 5 October 1878) was a Scottish portrait painter who painted Queen Victoria and many British aristocratic and political figures. He served as President of the Royal Academy. Life Grant was the fourth son of Francis Grant, Laird of Kilgraston, near Bridge of Earn, Perth and Kinross, Perthshire, and his wife Anne Oliphant of Rossie. Grant was educated at Harrow School and Edinburgh High School. His father, a plantation owner in Jamaica, died in 1818, leaving money to his seven children. Initially Grant intended to become a lawyer, but he left his studies after a year, and took up painting. He possibly spent time in the Edinburgh studio of Alexander Nasmyth. Grant through his second wife gained access to a clientele in the hunting set at Melton Mowbray, where he hunted himself, and took lessons with the artist John Ferneley. A palette () is a surface on which a painter arranges and mixes paints. A palette is made of materials such as wood, paper, glass, ceramic or plastic, and can vary greatly in size and shape. Watercolor palettes are generally made of plastic or porcelain in a rectangular or wheel format, and have built in wells and mixing areas for colors. For acrylic painting, "stay wet" palettes exist, which prevent the paints from drying out and becoming inert. A classical palette is most often oval, but can also be rectangular, and is tapered to ensure optimal distribution of weight. It has a thumbhole and insert for brushes, and is designed to be held in the non-dominant hand while the other is used to mix and paint. The Summer Exhibition is an open art exhibition held annually by the Royal Academy in Burlington House, Piccadilly in central London, England, during the months of June, July, and August.
