''Portrait of Lord Castlereagh'' is an 1809 portrait by the English artist Thomas Lawrence of the Irish politician Lord Castlereagh, then serving as the British Secretary of War. Lawrence had developed a reputation as a leading artist of society portraits, and was on friendly terms with the politician. The portrait was displayed at the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition of 1810 at Somerset House along with three other Lawrence works. Despite receiving praise from many quarters, Castlereagh's painting received a damning critique by Peter Finnerty, an opponent of the Irishman, in the ''Morning Chronicle''. The same year that the work was painted, Castlereagh oversaw the failed Walcheren Expedition during the Napoleonic Wars. Thomas Lawrence
Sir Thomas Lawrence (13 April 1769 – 7 January 1830) was an English people, English portrait painter and the fourth president of the Royal Academy. A child prodigy, he was born in Bristol and began drawing in Devizes, where his father was an innkeeper at the Bear Hotel, Devizes, Bear Hotel in the Market Place, Devizes, Market Square. At age ten, having moved to Bath, he was supporting his family with his pastel portraits. At 18, he went to London and soon established his reputation as a portrait painter in oil paint, oils, receiving his first royal commission, Portrait of Queen Charlotte (Lawrence), a portrait of Queen Charlotte, in 1789. He stayed at the top of his profession until his death, aged 60, in 1830. George Canning
George Canning (; 11 April 17708 August 1827) was a British Tory statesman. He held various senior cabinet positions under numerous prime ministers, including two important terms as foreign secretary, finally becoming Prime Minister of the United Kingdom for the last 119 days of his life, from April to August 1827. The son of an actress and a failed businessman and lawyer, Canning was supported financially by his uncle, Stratford Canning, which allowed him to attend Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. Canning entered politics in 1793 and rose rapidly. He was Paymaster of the Forces (1800–1801) and Treasurer of the Navy (1804–1806) under William Pitt the Younger. Canning was foreign secretary (1807–1809) under the Duke of Portland. Portrait Of George Canning
''George Canning'' is an 1826 full-length portrait by the British artist Thomas Lawrence of the statesman George Canning, a leading Tory politician. His career had been seriously disrupted by his 1809 duel with his cabinet colleague Lord Castlereagh, until his appointment as Foreign Secretary in 1822 after Castlereagh's suicide led him to a revival. He is shown speaking in the House of Commons. It was painted around the same time as Lawrence was depicting Canning's colleague the Duke of Wellington. Commissioned by Robert Peel, it was one of eight portraits he exhibited at the Royal Academy that year. It received qualified praise from fellow painter John Constable. The following year Canning became Prime Minister in succession to Lord Liverpool, but suffering from poor health died at Chiswick House after just 119 days in office. It was created in 1812 Stewart was a career soldier who had served in the Peninsular War as Adjutant General to Allied commander Lord Wellington.
