Porto Alegre Junior Championships
The Porto Alegre Junior Championships (), also known as the Copa Gerdau, is a prestigious junior tennis tournament played on outdoor red clay courts in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The tournament is held annually in late February or early March. It is one of five ITF Junior Circuit#Tournament grades, Grade A tournaments, the junior equivalent of ATP Masters or WTA Premier Mandatory events in terms of rankings points allocated. History The Copa Gerdau was founded in 1984, and has hosted international players since 1987. It has been a Grade A event since 2007. Before this event was promoted to Grade A, Brazil's Banana Bowl tournament had held that distinction since 1998. The original venue for the Grade A tournament was the International Championships of Venezuela, which was founded in 1978 and held in Caracas. Porto Alegre (, ; , ; ) is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian Federative units of Brazil, state of Rio Grande do Sul. Silvana Campos (born 11 May 1966) is a Brazilian former professional tennis player. Biography Tennis career Born in Ribeirão Preto, Campos competed on tour in the 1980s and represented Brazil in international events, including the Olympics and Pan American Games. She was fourth in the singles tournament at the 1983 Pan American Games and also featured at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where tennis was a demonstration sport. At the Olympics she was beaten in the first round by France's Pascale Paradis. Campos played Federation Cup tennis for Brazil in 1984 and won all four of her singles rubbers. On the WTA Tour she had her best performance at the 1984 Brasil Open in Rio de Janeiro, winning her way through to the semi-finals. Radka Bobková (born 12 February 1973) is a former Czech professional tennis player. Bobková has a career-high WTA singles ranking of 47, achieved on 20 September 1993. Aki Rahunen (born 24 December 1971) is a former professional tennis player from Finland. Career Rahunen was the 1989 winner of the Under-18s European Junior Tennis Championships, held in Prague. He performed well in the 1990 ATP Tour, reaching quarter finals at Stuttgart, Umag and Båstad. In Stuttgart he defeated top 50 players Javier Sánchez and Amos Mansdorf, both in straight sets. He was also a semi finalist at the Florence Open that year and reached the third round of the 1990 French Open. In the Davis Cup he appeared in 10 singles matches for the Finnish team, with a 6–4 record. He helped Finland qualify for the World Group in 1990. Nicolás Pereira (born September 29, 1970) is a commentator for the Tennis Channel and former professional tennis player, who became the ITF Junior World Champion in 1988 after winning the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. Gilbert Schaller (born 17 March 1969), is a former professional tennis player from Austria. Schaller achieved a career-high singles ranking of World No. 17 in 1995. At the 1995 French Open, Schaller upset world No. 2 Pete Sampras in the first round in a five set match. Schaller won one singles title (in Casablanca) and reached the quarterfinals of the 1996 Hamburg Masters and the 1995 Monte Carlo Masters.
